;) i know, Ive read your explanations once, some time ago, non the less someone who never heard about M88 may take you for someone else
just a thought brother

Yes, it is unfortunate that there are so few options for us folk that never grew up around hunting. Been around firearms for close to 30yrs, but never had someone to show me the ropes. As Suka mentioned, maybe a location based mentoring sticky could be created. To keep hunting around for future generations, it is imperative that people are helped.

First thing that came up in my search was an allusion to modern supporters of a certain dead far right party from WWII. I didn't know about that before it was brought up here.

What's this about paying for mentoring? Chipping in for gas and paying your own way I get, but are guys actually looking for money to take new hunters along?

If a camp charges fees for use per person and your asked if you want to going the hunt camp then yes you should pay the same as everyone. Why should one persons food, permits etc be free when others have to pay for it ?
Just my $0.02

Nothing wrong with people paying their way. I thought you were simply looking for people to help cover the cost of a hunt (nothing wrong with that) rather than mentoring them.

I've tried to find people ( mentor) a few times, but I think everyone's looking for something different depending on their situation. I am in niagara area looking for a spot and help for turkey hunting. I have a wife and kids so time for me is important and can't always make it out as hardcover as other guys

I also recieved your pm and did not interpret it as an offer of mentoring but more as just a spot in a camp. That combined with the fact that the week you are offering would not work for me lead me to not respond.

I get more enjoyment out of helping a new hunter learn the ropes than filling my own tags anymore. The problem is there are all sorts of folks on the internet. I'm sure 99% of the gunnutz on here are upstanding citizens, but it is the 1 percenter's that scare the beejeebers out of me. There is just too much anonymity on these forums too take the chance.

Head out into the woods with an armed stranger? Gives me reason to pause.

Growing up in the city and not having any family that hunts, makes hunting plenty discouraging sometimes. My first hunting experience was with an outfitter for goose/duck. He knew what he was doing but was a d**k! Yelling at me like I was a 5 year old to collect the downed birds. I'd really like to go bear and deer hunting this year(which I have never done) but, I'm cautious to ask for help from that experience. I know everyone isn't like that but it just leaves sour taste in your mouth. I guess the best way to screen out people is to come to my club and shoot a couple of times with me to see if your crazy or not lol.

I mentored a 2 former members of this board.

The first attempt: My truck, my gas, expected me to drive him to the deer as any form of physical exersion was out of the question.

The other...ALL talk. Couldn't interpret hunting regs to save his life...left us in a bit of a bind when he dropped the wrong animal.

I no longer mentor.

Huntsman saved the day on that last one Thk

I've taken strangers out just on day hunts. I've always gone over logistics and trip plans, and haven't had an issue with them being cheap or unprepared.

On the other hand, I've gotten plenty of hesitation from either the hunter or his wife about him getting into the car with me. Something about the nipple-length beard and camouflaged Ford Festiva sending blue smoke signals gives folks a surprise.

Other than a couple guys being chronically out of shape, I've never had a bad time.
