So I just got my first stuff to reload some 9mm, I got some berry plated bullets, and winchester 231, Now From berrys website they say use a light to medium FMJ load for the size of bullet which is 124 Gr RN.


So I grab my Lee manual and find winchester 231 in the 124Gr FMJ doesn't have a whole lot of spread says 4.2-4.5

seems fairly reasonable and with the autodisk use slot .37 so i try that and all i can get is 3.6 Gr over and over so I tried .40 i can get 4.14 which is still under obviously, Is it a No no to try different slots on the auto disk or is it a case of find the one that works and good to go?



Also OAL I assume its ok to be under a bit? i made a couple duimby rounds no primer and cycled them through manually they seem to feed and eject nicely so I assume it is best to try a few different OAL and find the best fit? just don’t go over the max right? which is questionable as well as it seems there are many different ones, even lee had two different ones the sheet that comes with the die set says 1.165 and the manual says 1.095.

Thanks in advance just want to make sure my brain is in the right mind set before i fire of 10 rounds or so to test.

does anyone with an auto disk know of a way to get a bit more out of it or is it sort what you get get is what you get i cant see the auto disk being able to change by only .3 to go from min- - max.
 
I am using 124 gr Barry's with titegroup powder. Due to powder variance I am using the .40 disk which according to the paperwork should be way over. I am getting 4.3 with it. I am new to this to but it seems that you have to experiment with the auto disk a bit. I just fired 200 rounds tonight and they all worked great.
I am getting a new scale as that lee scale is a pain. See what the other guys have to say but ultimately it is the weight and not the volume that matters.
 
yup in my experience the auto disk always throws less then what is says its gonna do...I am using a 124gr copper washed AIM projectile and I use 4.1gr on win231. Works great!

Just remember always start low....also in my findings the lee manual loads are usually on the hot side
 
I use the same Berry's projectiles. I started with 3.8 of HP-38 (same as Win 231) then did 4.0 and stopped at 4.2. All cycled fine in my shadow. I didn't crony them thou yet.
 
I can't help with the autodisk part, as I don't have one of those, but I use Berry's 124's and 4.3gr of W231. I have a Shadow, and they need a shorter OAL than most- I seat mine to an OAL of 1.087. I came up with that after a few trials and errors by seeing if the dummy rounds I made up would drop free from the barrel. I just removed the barrel, and kept trying different lengths until I found the right one: easy insert and drop free when I tilt the barrel up.
What pistol are you loading for?
 
I use the same bullet but with unique. Auto disk says .53, weight is 4.3 gr.

I found that it was easier to drop powder from the disk and weigh the charges. Do this 10x and average it out.

When you get the load you want use that setting.

Personally I found the min and then the max. Then I loaded 10 rnds at each level. Then I shot the rounds from a rest. I then set up the press to load the powder weight that had the smallest groups...... Simple no?

I have run the Berry's bullets near the top of the listed max in the Lyman 49th edition with no problems at all. I previously used the 147's but am now trying the 124hp and will again be using near max loads.

X2 on this. All I shoot in berry 124gr .I have gone all the way to max FMJ loads and they worked fine. I did start seeing occasional jacket seperation at max FMJ loads.

If you have any worries just use the 124 gr hollow bottom round nose, triple plated. They are good to 1400 fps so FMJ data is acceptable for them as you will never get 1400 fps out of a 9mm hangun
 
As previously stated "start low". See how they work in your gun. If they go bang and cycle the action could be okay. Test a few different loads and go with your best grouping. Have some factory loads handy for comparison and you should be able to feel and hear when the rounds you loaded are in the right "oomph" range. No use putting too much powder in if you don't have to.

Unless you want to shoot major in IPSC hot loads are harder on the gun and cost more money.
 
just for a bit of clarification starting and the min and working to the max for w231 on 124Gr FMJ (even though they are played) only goes from 4.2 -4.5 which I don't think the Lee auto disk can do that accurate. Or am I missing somthing?

Also does anyone have a little more detail on the OAL as long as your under the max and they cycle it should be ok to start with right? then work your way back up or down to find the best one correct?
 
You want to be careful using an under spec OAL. It will raise pressures to unsafe levels in pretty short order.

I recently read an article in hand loader magazine where they did tests on OAL in pistol cartridges. A safe load at book OAL for 357 mag went from sammi spec to 30k over pressure with a decrees of only 20 thou OAL.....

Berrys web site also states that only cast boolit data should be used for their plated projectiles....... You can go hotter than that, but not too much IMHO

Heading out to the range tomorrow to try the 124gr ammo i reloaded this week. the 115gr stuff worked awesome in my JR carbine.

115gr berry rn 4.4gr win 231 1.100COL.
124gr berry rn 4.0gr titegroup and 4.2 titegroup 1.130COL.
 
What do you use to dispense your powder how do you get .2 difference? I know on my lee disks I went from the space that was.37 to .40 and it went from 3.88grns to 4.14.

Did about 20 rounds tonight ha a really hard time getting a consistant oal I know they will fluctuate a bit due to it being round nose bullets got to pull about 6 as the oal was down around 1.70 and Manila says 1.90 ( turned die wrong way)
