Any Successful Ontario turkey hunts yet?

sounds more like he was offering to call for people to me , not have people hunting his land.

Yes, I know that Ryan... I was thinking that since he wants to call for others, he must have filled his second tag... or is that "reverse psychology" for getting into someone else's birds?

Or maybe some people are happy to help others enjoy the sport and teach them a few basic things so that they can become interested and it can grow.... I have no interest in "getting into" someone else's birds.. I have almost 400 acres of my own land as well as a couple of other permissions.... I just thought it would be nice to get out for a day and meet new people.... I offered to call... not to "hunt with"...

Since joining CGN I have met up with 3 members.... 3 others have standing permissions to my property and my permissions... I have given away calls I wasn't using to a couple of hunters here who are short on funds... I have even given away a rifle to a new hunter I met through a member here and offered to take him out... what have you done to help grow the sport lately?....

And as far as the second bird goes, don't worry.... I will be sure to post pics so you can tell me it isn't as big as I say it is again etc etc.... I would hate to deprive you of further opportunity for douchebaggery..... lol

Some people's kids....

That should have that straightened out,I would think!

You would think, would you... welll...

Most of us take newbie's out hunting... especially those of us with kids (their friends love to join in)... however, something that always "sticks in my craw" (and sometimes I just can't pass it up) are the armchair experts that make "inflated" posts... upping numbers and sizes and generally being arrogant if not deceitful... this happens with equipment and accuracy claims all the time, but can be particularly bad in hunting and fishing circles (some people have their identity attached to their standard of success). The problem is that this has overtime (and it will probably get worse) eroded the confidence and sense of success that many outdoorsmen feel, when they compare their experiences with the "digital dominators." As I said, it is a pet peeve... I can usually overlook it, but sometimes I slip... thats why I earlier "prodded" Bradley on his first 2012 bird... from his post it seemed (to me and others) that he was doing everything he could to NOT say the word "JAKE." I quote; "LOL.... well.. it's almost a Tom... if you look at the tail feathers you can see the black band is almost complete..." the bird is last years male... it is a JAKE, it is NOT a TOM, but so what! There is absolutely nothing wrong with harvesting any legal bird, whether its a hen, jake or tom... it is the experience that counts most... some of our most exciting and memorable hunts culminated in a jake going down... my point is neither Brad nor anyone else should be embarassed at taking a jake... and to present or infer embarassment minimizes the experience of many hunters out there who enjoyed similar or lesser success... the web is a wonderful place to gain information and connect with other sportsmen, but it can unfortunately also be used as a screen for egotistical wannabe's and armchair warriors who feed vicariously off of the experiences and information presented by others (to be clear, I am NOT pointing that at Brad, cause he's Super)... Ok, thats my rant for May... peace out fellow sportsmen... I'm off your case Bradley... and I sincerely hope you bag a whopper with your second tag!

Well things worked out great yesterday and the wife was able to shoot a monster of a bird, her first turkey, actually her first animal since getting her license last year.

24.1lbs, 1 1/8" x 1 5/16 spurs and a 9 3/4" beard!!!

Brad is not an Armchair expert, he has never claimed to be an expert. It seems you have burdened him with that handle and then harassed him.

Brad can walk the walk and talk the talk. I know I have met him in person, can you say the same?

Also posting condescending comments about another sportsman is pretty low. As well as de-railing this great thread with your personal attacks.

Congrats to your wife Duckslayer! That is a great first bird that any of us would be proud to put a tag on. Thanks for sharing the pics with us.

George

To be perfectly honest I didn't even know that was what you were getting at.... your posts are all made in big bold letters all the time so it is very hard to make out the expression and the tone...

Of course it is a jake... I never said it wasn't a jake... i posted it at 18.5 pounds which is what it weighed and I think the pic of the incomplete band shows everyone that it is indeed a jake.... I didn't realise I was supposed to spell that out any more than I already did.... If I shoot a whitetail this year and it doesn't have any antlers on it do I have to tell everyone it is a doe?...

I also fail to see where I claimed to be an expert of any kind... I just love hunting turkeys... I read, research and hunt... it;s what I love to do... I am here to read and share not unlike anyone else... and unlike you, if you look throughout this thread you will see me congratulating everyone on their birds.... most of which are bigger than the one shown in my pic.... I don't have a problem with that.... I told my story and I showed a pic of my bird and that was it...

To take your BS one further and insinuate that my genuine offer to help someone out for fun was actually "reverse psychology" to jump in on someone else's birds was out of line....

Now, to put the douchebaggery aside and get back to the thread....

Well things worked out great yesterday and the wife was able to shoot a monster of a bird, her first turkey, actually her first animal since getting her license last year.

24.1lbs, 1 1/8" x 1 5/16 spurs and a 9 3/4" beard!!!

Wow!... that IS a nice bird..... any chance we can get the full story?.... I have actually never seen anyone use a bipod on a shotgun like that but that's not such a bad idea... :)

What a beautiful bird! Congratulations! I'll bet she is rarin' to get out there again!

You know what "they say" opinions are like... everybody has one. I am not asking you to agree with anything that I say, but I have the right to put it out there... and I already said that I am done with pursuing anything further... so you two have a good day and good luck with the hunting year.

Ok hopefully that's over with and we can get this thread back to turkey hunting!!

I will post the story that I posted on a few other more hunting oriented sites since you ask, thanks for your interest. The bipod is actually more like a monopod but does fold out with two legs right at the bottom (made by Hunter Specialty). I have one on my gun as well and would not be without it in the turkey woods. To have your gun up and at the ready at all times is a big bonus for me, as well as those time where the bird takes what seems like forever to fully commit, your arms are not tired at all and you have no problems being accurate with your shot.

Here is the story behind the bird.

The wife and I started the morning off nice and early to make sure we slipped into the area undetected, we were set up well before 5am. We were at the spot where Brady shot the Jake two weeks ago and last weekend we had a Tom at 100yds but he wouldn't leave his hens and come in range for the wife. They have been really quiet this season at this location. We set up closer to where he had roosted last week, shortly into our sit, still dark out a deer starts blowing at us about 40yds away and I'm thinking great. Well after legal light we still had not heard a gobble but then one sounded off, of coarse he was on the other side of the bush. I started in on my slate, he would not answer me right away but was still gobbling so I switched to my diaphragm and he started to cut me off, perfect!! It wasn't long and his gobbles were getting closer, I told her to get ready and he broke the bush and started heading our way out in the field, we were set up along a creek that lead to the bush he was in, about 150yds out. He strutted, gobbled and slowly made his way over. He held up at 60yds for a while, I had shut up since before he had left the bush so I gave him a three note quiet yelp with the mouth call and that was all he could take, he closed in 30 more yds and was getting nervous so I told her to take him. At the report of the gun she had put down her first ever turkey, actually her first anything since getting her license last year. There was no doubt she was excited as when the bird was approaching I was afraid he was going to see her moving as she was breathing so heavy....lol. We walked up on her downed bird, what a bruser!!!! He tipped the scales at 24.1lbs, 9 3/4" beard, one spur had the tip broken but still went 1 1/8", the other 1 5/16" . Unreal for a first bird!!! She is already talking about next year :D :D :D

That is an amazing story.... nothing like waiting for that bird to come in!.... especially when you can hear the gobbles...

I was thinking that bipod would be nice for a novice shooter... no recoil and dead on aim.... There is so much more to turkey hunting than the shot.... and you guys show that... beautiful bird..... You can tell the missus I have harvested 13 in total.. two species... not one of them has been that nice...

Good for you guys.....

I'm having a helluva time getting any birds to cooperate this year. I finally found out why yesturday. There is some goofball hunting the same property as I am and I had no idea until yesturday. He only hunted saturdays and yesturday was the first saturday I hunted. Everytime I seen birds they would pay no attention to my calling and even run when they seen decoys.

Turns out this guy likes to call every 5 minutes for about a minute straight. Horrible box calling that sounds like a friggin dying crow. He also moves about every 30minutes as well. I watched him for two hours.

At least this property is 400 acres, I can go to the other side, but I havn't had one gobbler closer than 300 yards yet this season. At least a dozen hens have walked right up to my calling though.

I know there are at least a half dozen super educated toms on this property, havn't seen one jake yet.

My property is near 400 acres.... I got my first opening weekend.... since then, I have had at least one answer me every morning out... but never got one close.... I have a few tricks up my sleeve for ambush should I wish to get another jake (which I will when push comes to shove)... but I really want a limb breaker and I know there are some here....

You're a yote hunter bud... try and use the same idealogy as you do hunting yotes... those birds have to be somewhere.....
