me and my dad are taking our black badge course in august and we want to carry on to IPSC, we both shoot 9mm and we are trying to deside wether to reload our own ammunition or just buy commercial rounds.. currently im spending $25.99/ 50 rounds of American Eagle 124gr FMJ

Reloading pistol on a single stage is not worth the time, you need at least a turret press or will be way to slow for the volume of pistol and the cost savings when balanced against time

Besides money, reloading lets you tune your ammo lower than factory so that is an advantage

it's hard to find factory ammo that is consistent and isn't too powerful. i've tried 5-6 and nothing works too well. i just ordered some canadian bdx and see how it goes. if that doesn't work i'll need to start reloading.

Price out a Dillon SDB in 9mm, a scale, a fist full of primer tubes.

Look at the cost of bullets. ($75-120/k)
Primers ($28-40/K)
Powder ($15-30 for the 3-5gr)

Assuming you have your own brass, you might spend $200/k reloading. You can shave a few cents here and there and get that down to $140 or so with taxes.

Compare that to the amount you shoot, and figure out how many thousand you need to shoot to pay back the cost of your equipment.

so maybe the best thing for me to do is do my black badge and see how many IPSC shoots i plan on doing and if i start shooting more matches then look at reloading...if i only shoot a match here and there maye buying commercial/bulk ammo might work better for me?

Do you plan on practicing at all...?

If you guys will shoot more then 3K a year for sure reload.
Dillon Square Deal can make around 400-500 bullets per hour.
It is a good buy if you wanna reload pistol only.

That would be the primary reason for reloading. You get what you want, when you want it.

I used BDX for a few years. It's good stuff, just a tad dirtier than I like. Not a slam, just I've spoiled myself loading with VV.

I reloaded 1000 rounds for my black badge course a couple years ago, using my RCBS Rockchucker.
Thought it wouldn't be too bad. By the time I finished sizing/priming 1000 rounds, I was ready to set fire to my reloading bench and sell my new pistol.

I promptly purchased a progressive press after that.

So, It can be done if necessary but I wouldn't recommend it.
If you are going to get into IPSC, get a decent progressive press and don't look back.
Worst case scenario, you can sell it and recoup some of the cost if you decide to ever quit.

2 things to note here:

A) When you shoot competitions - you don't normally have the opportunity to pick up your own brass - there just isn't enough time. If the competition is at your home club and join in with the cleanup - then you can divvy up the brass.

B) If you don't reload - could you please send the brass to me? I go thru a ton of the stuff...

I don't mean to hijack the thread here, but there seems to be some posts lately on here which are along the same idea.

That brings me to a question: Is a person allowed to reload ammo and give/sell to someone else? I once loaded up for my buddy 50 rounds of .30-06 Springfield for his hunting rifle. He used them to sight in the gun and then kill a deer during hunting season.

I know that if you loaded up some 9mm Luger and sold/gave them to some thugs on the street the Fuzz might have an issue with it.

The whole thing seems to be a grey area to me.

Why reload for any one else dude I'm not a lawyer but its not a good idea for all kinds of reasons

I started 30 + yrs a go with RCBS ruckchucker, and today, couple of doz caliber later I still do all my reloads with it.
With one exception .38 wadcutters for which I also cast the bullets, all the rest are rifles reloading. Yes a Dillon is much faster, but I am not in the hurry .... and if I have to much free time it could be more expensive if I start making a new rifle...........!

its not a grey area, you need a licence to sell or trade reloaded ammo in canada, thus the existence of custom ammo and bdx

You're getting owned on your ammo prices. I recently bought 2 cases (2000 rounds/40 boxes) of that exact ammo (AE 9mm 124gr FMJ) from SFRC for $646.88 including tax and shipping ($16.172/box all in). $26+tax/box for 9mm is crazy.
