M1A Obscene Price

I had an email conversation with a Kiwi about some gas cylinder shims. He was insistent that the NZ import rules prohibited private import of even innocuous rifle parts. I ended up describing the tool to make them so he could consider how to make his own.

If the only mounts you can find are cheap soft alloy copies - what is stopping you from starting a manufacturing business for domestic consumption with the export market in mind? The example that immediately comes to mind is your fine Barnard target rifle actions. World beaters that were born of necessity.

ive been going at it wit M14's in nz for a few years ( by a few like..5 haha . so not that long )

-gun city are a waste of time.. erase all memory of them from your mind right now.

-SAI in auckland will do the norcs at $100 cheaper than the gun city norcs.. thats old mystery wood stocked units, 09 polys and 09 shortys

-dont waste your time on promag mounts, the rail is to spec but the mounting surfaces rarely are.
-the aluminium ones on trademe are utter crap, they flex and deform.
-gun city advertised a springfield armories mount... turned out to be a promag

if you want anything good join the IMAS.co.nz forums or buy it from the states through brownells, they will ship to NZ...

or.. if a company will accept your credito card, get it from our friendly canadian bretheren :D
ive had good dealings with Marstar

oh and if you are deadset on a springfield rifle.. again, dont go through gun city. find a store like, serious shooters, dead-eye dicks, SAI and ask them for quotes.. last time i looked it up i could get a SOCOMII or SOCOM 16 for $3800 NZ , where GC had them advertised for $4500

Not quite true.

Sporting rifle parts require a import permit which is free and easy to get.

Military Style Semi Automatic (E-Cat) parts are more complex. Some require you to hand in the old part. Not sure of the exact details as I don't have that license.

The M14 bits are not always simple as it can be a sporting rifle (A cat) or a evil MSSA (E cat) depending on the mag capacity and the stock.

Can you describe the tool used to make the gas system shims?

I realize gun city = gun ####ty. I have brought stuff there once before :)

The promag mount I have is steel and looks like good quality.

Which mounting surfaces are out of spec? When I had a quick go at mounting it the front to back level wasn't correct, is this what you are reffering to? I was assuming the stripper clip guide on the receiver was out of spec.
 
I've used several of the genuine ARMS 18 mounts, and the Promag clones.

The ARMS comes with a proprietary dovetail adapter, but other than that, I can't see much difference between the two.

Both mounts are VERY low, which I like for several reasons.
However,
with some rifles,
the ejected cases will sometimes hit the mount, or if you have a scope with Target turrets, may hit the right windage adjustement turret of the scope.

Sometimes an ejected case will bounce back into the op rod and jam the op rod/bolt/fresh cartridge feed.

One cure is to mill out the center of the ARMS/Promag mounts, to duplicate the old style split mount,
OR,
cut a coil off of the ejector spring,
or adjust the tip of the ejector to change the angle of ejection.

NOTE that this occasional jam does NOT occur with all rifles, or all ammunition, only some.

NOTE also, that if you are having trouble fitting an ARMS mount to your reciever, it is NOT the fault of the ARMS mount. These mounts are held to much closer tolerances than most aftermarket receivers. Genuine US GI M14 receivers and Chinese NORC or POLY FORGED receivers will almost always fit these mounts perfectly.

Hmm I went to the police station here in N.Z. and the arms officer there told me I wouldnt need an import permit as long as the part wasnt E cat.
