TOok my new norinco hp9 to the range today and shot some federal 2 3/4 00buck at 20 yards. My when i took a look at the target it looked as tho i was shooting slugs. I took a look at the spent hulls to make sure that i wassent. The gun is 14 inch cyl. I have never seen this happen before. Could the wad and shot be staying together and going through the paper? I cut a few shells open when i got home to makesure someone didnt screw up at federal but they were indeed buckshot.
 
measure the opening of the muzzle with an inside edge of a vernier caliper, Compare to standard for a cylinder bore of .730 inches or 18.5 mm. Maybe it is a little to big? Try other ammo also.

It is just a tube with a handful of lead beads. Not too many things for Norc to screw up. I have 2 of them. :)
 
Federal is one of the better patterning buckshot mfrs out there. Were the wads infront of or behind the target? Sounds like the wad hadnt seperated from the shot column at 20 yds and was passing thru the target. Was there any buckshot holes in the target? Try some other brands too, Winchester Super X and Remington dont use shot cups or buffer and should open up a little more at those ranges. You wont know until you try them.
 
I will have to measure the bore tonight. Come to think of it some of the wads were past the target. If the bore was a tad to big would it not allow the wad to seperate from the shot? Out of 10 shots 4 did not open. When i cut a few shells open the filler was jamed in there so tight and sticking everything together.
 
It is close to the size it should be... I say experiment with ammo and distance from target to see if it opens at 30-40 yards.

Try at a longer distance, sounds like theyre doing exactly what Federal designed them to do. Some cheaper non-buffered buck loads should open up a bit.
 
That's happen to me before within the 20 yard range, sometimes it looks like you've shot a slug, when you're shooting 00

I know that temperature can effect the gas seal at the base of the wad
on shotguns with overbored barrels. IE: .780"-800" overbores which
some trap shooters have used. If it's too cold out, the gas seal on the
plastic wad won't expand enough to seal the bore and result in lower
velocity, squib-like loads.

It would be good to do some testing with the buckshot loads the OP
used in his tight bored Norinco on a warm day & a cold day.
His bore at .725" is the European standard bore where the North American standard is .729". This might help explain the one hole shots, but then again
it could be an issue with the wads in the Federal ammo.

My own Browning A-5 with a .725 cylinder bore 20" barrel shoots super
tight groups with Winchester Super X 1oz. slugs, but sprays huge
patterns at close range with birdshot. I have'nt tried buckshot out
of it yet.
 
Well i have a few different brands of buckshot and a lot of birdshot to try out sometime this week. I will post back with results. As others have posted i have also heard federal is said to hold a tight group but thats a bit too tight for intended purposes.
 
The federal contains the flight control wad, i think that is why you are experiencing a tight pattern, but from my Hp9 at 20 yards with the federal, looking at about a 10 - 12 " spread

Does the cheap bulk Federal buck contain their special wad? I would have guessed not based on the price but I bought one of those 175 round cans expecting cheap stuff but it is probably the tightest buck I've ever shot.
