Hello fellow CGNers,

So, I've been toying with the idea of training for and participating in IPSC competitions. Now I know all you CGNers out there have opinions. Most of the time people say "keep your opinions to yourself" well . . . This time I wanna hear your opinions!! I've always had my eye on the CZ SP-01 Shadow and I want to pick one up soon (I've never seen a gun move faster on EE!!). Consensus I've gleaned through the forums is that the Shadow is the pistol to shoot IPSC with however, I would be interested in knowing what other options are out there for a pistol that g2g out of the box (or with minimal upgrades). I look forward to your responses!!!!! :dancingbanana:

Shadow. Hands down. I know I'm new here (this being my first post and all...), but it's only because I spend more time shooting and travelling and working than I do on the computer, lol! I grew up shooting a series 70 Colt Gold Cup and a Browning Gold Medalist so i know my way around an "out of the box" shooter when I see or shoot one. I picked one up about a month ago and can group under 2" at 15 yards with medium pace shooting. Double taps are a cinch to control with the added weight the shadow has and if a guy was inclined to go the extra mile and change the recoil spring to the DPM dampening one... well, it would be sweet for sure.

FWIW, I think any gun you feel truly comfortable with is the winner though. Might be a Glock, might be a Ruger SR1911, might be a Hi Powere. Different for every guy/girl. For the money and what the Shadow offers the average shooter and to be ready to rock for production class IPSC... I say a Shadow is a clear winner Adam Tyc thinks so too, ;) Just my 2 cents. Cheers!

1st 1911 or variant. Because I'm a 1911 snob :) At a match you will usually see more 1911s than everything else combined.
2nd Shadow A great gun to get into IPSC with. It will also take you as far as you'd like to go in IPSC.

If you're talking only production division than yes the shadow is the best gun for the money but since you probably don't have your black badge yet my recommendation is to get a glock 17 or m&p 9 (without mag safety option) to do your BB with first. Much easier to do the course without worrying about having to decock the gun constantly.

Out of box and ready to go... Shadow, stock 2/3, or g17.

Classic division: any single stack 1911.

Standard division: STI/SVI or custom limited

Open division: STI/SVI or eric open

There is something to be said for just running something stock for a while until you get your feet wet. I have seen many guys get sidetracked in a lot of different sports on the equipment. Get something that fits you and work on your skills if you want to improve. Starting in production is a great way to do this. As you have seen, it would be really easy to sell a shadow if you don't like it, but that is very unlikely.

I like the shadow and it was a natural choice for me as I had been running a 1911 for a while and the shadow has the same controls and grip angle. So if you decide to continue on in the sport and move to another division, you will in all likelihood get in to a 1911 and if you start with a shadow using a 1911 will be an easy transition. As has been mentioned the majority of shooters have some 1911 type of pistol.

Handle a few canditates if you can and see what you like. Some will feel better right off the bat and you may naturally shoot something better than something else. A buddy of mine bought a sig and tried to work with it for a long time, but he has finally come to the realization that it is a little too big for his small hands and now he has to flip it and get something else.

I would not consider the fact that the shadow does not have a decocker on it to be a factor. The sig and other pistols do have a decocker, but decocking a pistol manually is not difficult, although it does make some nervous.

Bear in mind that you cannot run a stock shadow in IDPA as it is too heavy. You would need to swap out the grips at the very least to lighten it up enough and some of them need another change or two to get it to "make weight".

I shoot ipsc and not idpa but I thought I read somewhere that the shadow now qualifies for idpa as is. Is this not the case?

It looks like you don't know a lot about IPSC. Do you have a Black Badge? What was the highest level IPSC match you've competed in?

To be honest I don't compete in IDPA either, but I would like to in the future.

Check the rules http://www.idpa.com/documents/idparulebook2005.pdf

I don't believe that there is an "approved" list for IDPA as there is for IPSC, but there is a maximum weight for each division. It looks to me like the Shadow could go in to "enhanced service pistol" as is (maximum 43 onces) but not in the "stock service pistol" (maximum 39 onces).

I personally dislike the Shadow (flame suit on, don't worry :D) but can not deny it is extremely popular, incredibly easy to shoot, and it is THE gun to shoot in IPSC production due to the 2-2.5lb SA trigger and the felt recoil of a .22

No. The S-01 Shadow has a FLDC and must meet SSP requirements to compete ie must weigh 39oz or less with an empty mag. The gun stock weighs more than 39oz. CZ makes a 75 Shadow now that comes without a FLDC and meets both SSP and ESP requirements.

Take Care

The way it boils down right now as far as popularity
Production: CZ Shadow
Classic: Still too early to tell but probably STI Spartan or Trojan
Standard: STI Edge or Eagle
Open: STI framed gun
Revolver: S&W 625

Production Division is sooooooooo last decade.

Buy yourself a quality single stack 1911 and get in on the ground floor of the newly created Classic Division. (it's the way IPSC was meant to be played!)

Knowing that the Shadow is a clear favorite for production IPSC means I know nothing about IPSC? Lol, flame on some where else dude... I don't need to list anything I've done to anyone, what I qualify for or how well I shoot to state my opinion about a gun and give some feedback.

Fwiw, I hope my info is more helpful to JustMyLuck than it is for you.

Cheers

(P.S. - It's attitudes like that that continually turn me away from IPSC and keep me interested in IDPA and 3 Gun... I have nothing to prove and am a shooter because I enjoy it, ;) )

kind of hard to give an opinion about what to use for a sport if you don't play it, just sayin. the illegal mod comment probably brougth up the exp question.
