Best Out The Box and Why???

I really like the look of the T3 Tikka Varmint as far as the way the action seems to flow into the barrel.
However, I prefer a nice laminate stock for overall feel and looks.
For me, the Savage would be my choice mainly because of the ease of barrel swaps and headspacing.
Rifle barrels in high intensity chamberings have a relatively short life out in the gopher or ground hog fields or if you shoot lots of targets.
That shorty Tikka though would sure look good in laminate.:)

are they as accurate as a $347 Axis?

Cheers

Well I do not see Savage putting a 1MOA guarantee on ANY of their rifles so take from that what you will.

Having ACTUALLY owned a Tikka rifle I can say for certain that you get what you pay for. Mine was a T3 Lite SS in .223 and could hold 10 ring (or better) on the ISSF 300m targets for at least 10 shots and it had a pencil sporter barrel on it. The shooter, at the time, was another story....LOL

Sounds to me like you're having a case of post-purchase-dissonance. You were shopping for a new rifle and looked at the Tikka, but mistakenly chose a POS Savage, which you're now extremely unhappy with. You're now trying to rationalize your error in judgment by attacking the best out of the box rifle for under $1000

No, you brought up accuracy/$. I was addressing the amount of effort, work, assembly time, manufacturing process, quality based on materials of construction/dollar. IMO (in my opinion) they retailed for more money than was apparent in their gun.

Relax, if you like the Tikka fine, to me it looked like a long action with the bolt stop or pin or whatever moved up to shorten the action rather than a built SA. It was one of several things combined with plastic mags etc that I didn't wish to spend 1000+ dollars on.

Your ESP/fortune telling/needs work. I am EXTREMELY happy with my POS(perfect out of box Savage).:p
Here is yesterdays load testing @ 200yds after this load shot .750" @ 300yds as an example.

Yeah, I guess the Tikka MOA guarantee is important and influences sales. By the way isn't the 10 ring on the ISSF 300m a 100mm, 4 inch ring? 4"@300 meters would that be MOA ? Gee, all this meters vs yds, Finland vs USA firearms, quality vs price, internet shooting vs real shooting, kinda confusing...eh?

308 5R Milspec without any questions is a one hole gun with Fed Gold 168smk's. A TikTac is good as well but you'll pay for it.
My experience is through owning and shooting these rifles.

Take a look down a Savage or Remington barrel with a bore scope and compare that to a Tikka barrel,
Yeah I have, looked down all of them and still would grab a remmy first. Have owned savage and liked them I prefer the feel of the Remington it works for me. No Doubt tikkas got a following and they are great rifles but don't inspire as much but good for them more competition the better for us shooters!

Remington's just feel better in my hands like nice toight B cup!

Great rebuttal and excellent shooting!

Got to agree with Tikka t3 varmint, had 3 and love it, very hard to beat for quality and price wise, if you have deep pocket: get Sako TRG, Tikka T3 is still best bang for the buck and quality!

I'm hoping to head out this weekened and do some real shooting with my Savage FCP-SR and see what I can do with it. So far though the accuracy is amazing!

has anyone pulled the action from the stock?? im wondering if the contact surface between the action and stock is flush or if its only a few contact points like the remmy 700's?

Tikka or Savage model 10. The only reason I got the model 10 instead of the tikka is because of the screamer of a deal that I received. I will recommend the savage as well, but tikkas would be my number one pick. Especially if you are buying new only.

tikka varmint 6.5x55 by far the most accurate gun ive owned,1/2 in 3 shot groups at 200 yards with 130 accubonds,ya flame all u want i have the targets.....should of kept it...the guy i sold it to is very happy

My savage 10BA shoots lights out.
It is not a sub $1500 gun but it is still a model 10 in a chassis.
I have a 10TR on the way which will be here onWednesday if a Canada Post doesn't screw things up.
By next Saturday or Sunday I should have a good indication if this $600.00 gun can shoot.

Just to give you an idea what my rifle can do on a typical day out of the box here is my cold bore group from the precision rifle clinic in Petawawa. This isn't a hand picked target simply what my rifle did straight out of the bag that morning.

I have to say, if we stay in the sub 2000.00 rifle the most accurate out of the box could be the Sig SSG 3000 Patrol rifle 308 @ 1700.00, it feel like a custom... JP.
