The ORA conducted Service Conditions Rifle Match #1 this past weekend at Connaught Ranges.

As a first time participant it was really great to finally see what the match was really like after reading, researching and trying to ask intelligent questions of the match director for 8-10 months.

It really was a fun event. Getting to shoot beside a military rifle team was a pleasure and a learning experience. It was also very clear that experienced shooters using issue kit kick ass. As a civilian it also good to get to chat with members of our forces to get a bit of a window into that world. And hey, how often am I going to get to bunk with a QM? :)

There was a real sense of camaraderie between all participants. Even thought we were each technically competing against each other, everybody was willing to pitch in to help each other out and overcome any challenges that were presented.

All in all a great weekend. I personally had a ton of fun and learned a great deal. Big thanks as always to the MD for running a smooth match, the butt officers for keeping us all straight on that end of the range, the ORA for facilitating the event and frankly, thank-you to DND for allowing myself and other civilians to make use of their great facilities and participate in this type of event

Just to add a couple of things I learned.

1) Connaught winds are kind of mean. Our relay zeroed at 500 in calm air, only to have a minor gale come up at 9 o'clock immediately after the last zeroing round. Fudge.

2) Always tug your mag to make sure it is seated. Arriving at the next firing point after a run down without your mag is.....disappointing. Doh!

Hahah that wind was sneaky as I had a perfect bulls eye and another hit center target during zeroing using my BDC only to have all my 10 shots land about 12-16 inches to the right when started!

What a great weekend, this was my 1st match as well and I can't wait for the next one :)

Last year at NSCC PR, everyone on my relay missed the same 400m mover exposure when a ~12 MPH wind suddenly changed direction. There was one instance where a flag on a pole 50m in front of me was pointed ~45 deg. to the left while the little flag we had stuck on the mount next to us was ~45 deg. to the right.

Great time had all, as Bolivar said, meeting up these shooters was fantastic, given the wealth of experence and really fine shooting that took place.
Definitely leave the plates at home for this match!
Match was smooth a silk and TimFu kept the weather at bay, again!
Thanks again to our hosts who were great to meet and a fine bunch.
See ya in few weeks!

Yes, that would have been a good idea. I will have to add that to my mental tool box. I was too busy saying "Oh s**t" to myself when the wind came up.

I sort of did that at 400, at least I adjusted until I did not see dust kick near the right side of the target. I don't remember what my POI was for that exposure. My head was spinning a bit trying to keep the course of fire straight in my head. That will come with time and experience.

It's actually "Modified Prone" I believe.

All the talk about munchies and TV made me hungry.

I've heard a few terms for this position.. Urban prone, modified prone......

But Modified prone for CQB......

That was my first SR match ever. I did better than I expected considering I never shot past 200 meters before. I first thought I would struggle past 200 meters and rank last but I did OK, and won first tyro :)

Couple of things I learned:
- 10 rounders with couplers are no good when shooting prone. The coupler tend to slide off under recoil when using the mag as a monopod. Will use pmags exclusively for these stages next time or ducktape the coupler.
- I should slow down a bit on the run downs. I ran like crazy and arrived first at the FP on a couple of occasions. But it was hard to aim when out of breath. (some cardio would help there)
- Practice the kneeling position. I just need to find a range that'll let me shoot kneeling. :)

Thanks to Tim, and the people in the butts that showed me what to do :)

That was a great experience, I'll definitely be back for match #3.

I did not see an Civis with cameras. One of the mil team members was filming their own group but I would guess that this would be kept internal.

Search ORA Service Rifle and you will find vids from last year (monsoon) and the year previous I believe.

Yes I know and have seen the vid's for 2010 and 2011 as it was taken by one of my fellow gun club members in MTL and SR competitor. I wanted to see some from our match but no worries :)

Tape works. After you tape it, insert the mag into the mag well and ensure the tape does not interfere. You can cut arms off mag chargers, tape the opening closed and use that to cap the end of the coupled mag that sits on the ground when prone.

Run faster, not slower. Always faster. Practice breath control and trigger control at home. Slow people get eaten first.
- Practice the kneeling position. I just need to find a range that'll let me shoot kneeling. :)
Practice at home in front of tv first. Then, apply at range.

*edit
P.S. Congrats on top tyro! If you got top tyro despite the learnings above, you're off to a great start.
