Hi Guys,

I will be attending a CQB match and wanted to ask what type of setup would be a good start. I know it comes to preference and comfort so it will be different for each person. I will my list questions so it's easier to answer. My chest rig has no room for mounting a pistol so my list is my available options.

  1. Drop leg Holster or Belt Holster?
  2. How many pistol mags are required and ammo load out?
  3. Rifle Optics - Red Dot 1x only or magnified as well?
  4. I would assume 25m to be the maximum shooting distance?
Thanks

My 2 cents,

I prefer a belt holster. I know the drop-leg looks cooler but in the stages where you do have to run forward, having the gun at your hip (pivot) I think is much better than on your leg.
You need 2 pistol mags but more is always betters for pistol or rifle.
I use an aimpoint (red dot) and love it as it easy fast to acquire and parallax free. Many do use rifle scopes and do well with it.
Longest distance is 35m with rifle and 25m with pistol.

These are my opinions only and you may want to add a kilogram of salt as I have only been to 1 of the clinics and 1 match so far.

I prefer a leg rig as my vest and pouches get in the way of drawing from a belt holster.

Some guys a belt mount that actually drops the holster below the belt I think. Might be the best of both worlds.

Just don't get a universal holster that relies on a flap or straps. You will either loose too much time on the draw or drop your pistol when moving forward. I've done both :)

Serpa works great for CQB and there are other good options.

Edit - the ORA service sticky contains a list of all the gear you need. Read that and if you have more questions go ahead and ask. We'll do our best to answer them.

I use a bladetech holster with the DOH ( drop offset ) witch drops the holster below my belt line out of the way of my vest / chest rig.

You will find that what ever you pick at first will change over subsequent events. Leg holster is fine, except I find it gets loose by afternoon as my fat tapered legs won't hold the straps. So I have it up a bit with it partly around my waist, almost cowboy gun. Now it doesn't slip down.

Mags again is a matter of taste. I have 6 mags located in two different places. Three are on my vest on the left under my arm. They are for the first load of the pistol. The other three are on my left chest upside down. Both groups are load of the mags in order of use 3,3,5. That way I don't pull a 5 rounder when a 3 is needed or worse, a 3 rounder when a 5 is needed (done that a couple times).

Optics: I use to have a red-dot. But I'm red-green colour blind and I spend too much time looking for the dot to place it on target. So now I have a mil-dol reticle on a 1.5-4 zoom. Havn't used it yet. Red dots can be a problem when the sun is bright behind you. If you use an electronic scope make sure you have a fresh battery at the beginning. Some, who will remain nameless, have found their dot dissapearing mid day with no spare battery.

For optics I would not worry about magnification. I have a 1.5-5 scope on my and leave it at 1.5 all the time for CQB. Wider field of view is your friend.

I personally like elevation adjustment. Your POI changes significantly as you change range from 35 to 10 yards. The other option is to aim higher as you get closer.

I'm personally not a fan of an optic the depends on batteries. That is just me though. Many guys use them to great success.

When considering holsters and other gear be sure to consider the "modified prone" position used in match 3 in which the rifle is shot (10 snap, 10 rapid) while lying on your strong shoulder. This may influence how you position your items, especially your holster.

Snapshot

I most likely will use my EOTECH XPS-0 for optics

I need to test out the drop leg or belt holster with my vest and as snapshot mentioned the "modified prone" position needs to be considered! Plus I will be carrying a heavy pistol, CZ SP-01...not easy finding tactical holsters for this but I'm looking at IMI defense right now as I could set it up for both options!

Mine came from Opsgear, their Molle holsters can hold any pistol (I have a Cz 85). The only issue I have with Opsgear is they are so busy it takes months to get your order.

I was rocking a Safariland ALS & SLS in STX finish, attached with QLS on a UBL hanger for CQB and I was almost DNF when I forgot  to load 2 x 5 rd pistol magazines for the transition match 4. What a dummy I am! f:P:

Serpa holster rock for this game, too! Buy what works for you and this game!

I usually agree with my friend hungry, but this time I can't, I do not like blackhawk holsters. Personal preference. I love my Safariland 6004 for my Glock or my issue BHP.
I know guys who rock a serpa but I just don't like'em. Hungry's set up is near perfect for CQB, he let me borrow it for some training with him good quality kit is always a must!

I dunno... except for the beard, he matches Priscus' description of Attila the Hun quite well:

"Short of stature, with a broad chest and a large head; his eyes were small, his beard thin and sprinkled with grey; and he had a flat nose and tanned skin, showing evidence of his origin."

Change of plans, im going to use my new Beretta 92A1 I just bought for an amazing deal here in MTL, $725 plus 1000rds of Blazer 124gr FMJ for $200.
Total was $925 plus tax...I need to break it in first as I have from now until July's CQB match.

I think I will go with the Blackhawk Tactical SEPRA holster as I found it on-line for $95 from OpticsPalnet.

Thanks guys for the reply's and suggestions :)

MMMMMMM Serpa.

However, you might want to try SFRC unless you ordered already

That is only the holster though, maybe your Optics Planet cost included a thigh rig too?

Also, lots of guys HATE Serpas and many instructors won't allow them on their courses. I am considering buying something different if I go on a course that prohibits them. Someday I will get around to research.

I like mine and it is totally good to go for CQB but be aware regardless. Heck, the MD loves them so they cant' be total crap.

But post a Serpa question in the Action Shooting forum and you will have your head ripped off (figuratively of course). Do a search up there if you like. And once you read all the negativity towards them.....buy it anyway :)

I know two senior BB instructors who have no problem with Serpas.
Probably wouldn't take a course from amyone who would whine about the Serpa's track record for safety.
The issue is training, some folks who use the 1911 Serpa level 3 with a thumb break have shot themselves.
For the life of me I don't get it. whenever I draw from a Serpa my finger is on the side of the frame where it's supposed to be not in the trigger guard.
Ans I have zero co-ordination (shoes don't match belt either)
