300 AAC Blackout Accuracy Issues

and suputin, after seeing some of your posts, not a doubt in my mind that yours is the coolest....

It turned out better than I had expected. I used a tensioned carbon fibre outer tube which looks absolutely gorgeous. :)

we'll have to get some people together and have a .300 blk shoot, I have no problem making the drive.

That is actually a good idea. If we did it at a range people could bring their AR Blackouts as well. Would be fun to get together and swap loads etc.

That'd be a cool idea! Too bad I'm on the east coast. I've never been to Calgary before.

Calgary is beautiful hahaha. Worth the trip.

I have a number of relatives and friends who live in the area. It's a place that I've wanted to visit but I'd have to do more than go shooting to justify the expense, unfortunately. ;)

*cough cough* 100 year Calgary stampede *cough cough*

*cough cough waterton/banff national park, royal tyrell museum/drumheller *cough cough*
^^ all just a day trip away.

Yay, I finally got my Blackout bolt gun back. I had only just gotten it broken in and it had to go out for a demo. :( But now it is back and I can finally do some chronographing of loads and see how it sounds outside.

Oh I don't know about that. A couple days shooting gophers and I think you might find you got your money's worth. :)

Hmm...that's got my attention. lol. Can you hunt gophers in the fall?

There is really not much "hunting" involved which is why we refer to it as shooting gophers. Just plunk your ass down in a field and shoot the little buggers by the hundreds.

We can shoot anytime but the gophers are really only up from April to Aug. The best time is mid May to end of June. After that the grass gets longer and the adults start to go back down into their holes.

Seems like a useless round to me. I have no idea why anyone would ever want one. Thats just me and my 2 cents.

It would be a neat deer hunting cartridge if the AR-15 was unrestricted (perhaps an XCR?). Just swap uppers. Same magazines and same bolt face as .223.

There is also lots of brass available (resize .223 brass) and .308 bullets are common. Great cartridge for reloaders.

Finally got a chance to shoot my rifle for group. I did a test for the Swiss-P importer as well.

Both these groups were shot with RUAG Swiss-P 300 Whisper, 220gr subsonic. Groups measured 1.0 - 1.2 MOA. While not target grade accuracy this is more than acceptable accuracy for a 12" barreled working carbine, especially when one considers the terminal punch and lack of noise.

^^^ At what distance - 100 yds? If so, that's great accuracy for subsonic factory load NOT tuned to your rifle. 220 SMK's?

Those were shot at 50 yds cause that's all the indoor range I was using has. Hence why I quoted MOA instead of the actual group size.

I'm not sure what bullet RUAG uses but I highly doubt it is a SMK.

I'm pretty happy with these results because it shows what the rifle is capable of. My next step is to see what a 208 AMAX and a 200 Lapua will do with a couple of different powders. However that will have to wait a bit as the rifle has gone out on a demo so I won't have it for a couple of weeks. :(

Just a head up for those trying out Hornady's factory 300 Whisper.

I run a 300 Fireball/Whisper AR-15, and my brother a 300Blk AR-15 and we were trying out the Hornady 300 Whisper ammo that's advertised as being fully compatable with 300Blk chambers. In mine it fired fine, but in my brothers we could barely get a hit on the primer. He was going to run it back to ATR to check the headspace, but I'm thinking that they're not quite as "compatable" as Hornady claims.

I don't have any experience with the Hornady ammo specifically but I use SSK 300 Whisper dies and have both a 300-221 chamber and a 300 Blackout chamber and use converted 221 Fireball brass as well as cut down 223 brass and everything seems to work fine.
