Has this ever been discussed or is it a viable option? I was thinking a neat re-caliber would be to rebarrel a M305 to a 7.62x39 caliber.
Thoughts?

Anything is possible, $$$$$ pending, but woult it be practical?
Although if one wants something totally exclusive and one off, that would be a thought.

Anything is possible. But the casing head is different, so you'd need a new bolt too. And a new magazine. And possible change to the gas system (less pressure from a 7.62x39). Don't forget that the sights for the 305 are based on a .308Win round, so the scale on the elevation knob would be all outta whack, especially at the longer ranges.

Or you could get an SKS :)

Oh, and the gun would spontaneously combust while creating a black hole, since it's a capitalist gun chambered for a communist round. Can't have those two so close together hahaha

Yer  #### WILL fall off ! :nest:

Or

You will shoot yer eye out! :D

Seriously, save your money. Load up some 110 gr Vmax boolits or 125 gr Speer TNT boolits. Major blast, no recoil, life is good!

Is anyone else tried of these same stupid questions popping up every couple of days? The answer is so obvious that it kills my brain cells even having to answer the question. Yes it’s possible. Do you have the money to make it happen? No. Well then go by an SKS or a Ruger mini-30 then.

It's the first time since I joined CGN that I've seen this asked.....I may have missed a few posts over the years though.....
Forums would get pretty dull if everyone was afraid to post a stupid question.
Just move on.

A few years back I recall reading about a .308 to 7.62x39 chamber adapter that could be installed with a bit of locktite, and if need be could be removed with a .308 broken case extractor. Jamie Mangram of the now defunct Surplusrifle.com did an article on how he installed one into an M1916 Spanish Mauser carbine (he blocked off the magazine as well) and got decent accuracy out of it.

I suppose that someone sitting on alot of 7.62x39 could give it a try, though it probably won't cycle but rather turn the rifle into a single shot bolt action. I say single shot because one would still have to create a magazine in 7.62x39 if they hope to make it into a repeater, which begs the question as to the practicality of such a project.

Point taken. I also have the option to not even click on the post in the first place. I guess thats pretty stupid.

Since this thread is headed in this direction...

the 243, 7mm-08 and 338 fed all share the same parent case I believe, I like the idea of a quicker moving 6mm (243) would rebarreling it to 243 have some huge painful costs or difficulties other than a new barrel?

no, springfield armories did that with the m1a awhile back- just a matter of sticking a 243 barrel on there- probably a different mainspring,( lighter) b/c of the lighter bullet weight, but it's a pretty minimal intrusion- when you go the other way- ie the 338 fed, i should imagine you run into the same problems as you do when you exceed 175s in the m14 platform- basically , heavier bullets beat the hell out of the action, oh yea, and a different front sight or a different ladder, as the 243 ballistics are different than the 308
