Damn Porcupines AGAIN, post 167... Nos decided to kill one... PICS POST 49

I'm glad Nos is doing well Jay! My dog is young and hasn't found one of them yet, but when I find them they are going to meet a quick demise!

I have been a friend of Jay for many years and though I don't get to see him and his family much any more I will always remember the "enthusiasim" that dog has. I have no doubt that that porky went down hard. If I know anything about Nos, this is fact "instinct driven" that dog is well trained but man if it wants to do something it does it. I think your right Jay. Time for a shock collar. I know you don't need it for training him but if it keeps you from going broke at the vet then do it. A good dog is always worth the $$. I would put a dog down if it was was suffering or bit someone. My last dog never bit anyone... Except Jay once.... That's OK though.... another story eh Jay lol

Yup! Lots of good times with the dogs! And yes, memories of your pup Suzie sure bring back alot of smiles!

As for Nos, you are completely correct, he's a very hard driving dog that just won't back down! He's a little sh1t disturber, costs me $, but damn I'd miss him if I didn't have him with me! He's worth EVERY penny AND MORE! (Currently shopping for a beeper/shock collar for Monster-Nos...)

Oh ya, we've pulled an additional 49 quills in the last 17 days since surgery... We are watching Nos's eyes very closely, I can deal with quills, I can't deal with a blind hunting dog... And Nos is completely back to 'normal', he's even added to his vermin kill count, dispatching a squirrel on a walk this past week... Dumb squirrels, they should learn to stay in the trees and NOT tempt fate running on the ground where they are fair game...

Cheers

whats the total quill count Jay?

whats the total quill count Jay?

Well, its really unknown... The vet 'stopped counting' at 400... And we have removed an additional 49 as of today... I am amazed that there is no puss or signs of infection when we pull a quill as its worked its way out... Damn TOUGH dog!!!

Cheers

My paradigm is that pets, once inside my home are members of the family. I have and will continue to spare no medical expense in saving them providing that the treatment will result in a good quality of life for them. Any money I saved by not treating them would be blood money and I don't deal in blood money.

What you said 100 and I don't know JAY but would give anything I own

to have a friend like him,he is indeed a dogs best friend! And my NBF!

I miss my drahthaar. When I decided I was going to get one, I told my boss, who participated in field dog trials with his Shorthairs, and he rolled his eyes and said
"Every time there's a fight on the line, you can be sure that a Wire Hair started it. Are you sure you want trouble like that?"

My Lady-dog wasn't fearless, she was scared of plenty of stuff, just nothing with fur on it. She was famous around town here for chasing bears. That and showing-up at the back door of the pub's kitchen at closing time.
She had a great soft mouth, she would regularly bring me chickens, I mean as in laying hens... Problem was that they were the neighbour's chickens. We always returned the birds, she never killed any.
We waited a long time for the "brain fairy" to pay her a visit; but when she started to settle down she was the best dog I ever owned. When she died it was nearly 10 years until I got another; because I knew that the next dog just wouldn't measure-up to her.
I'm glad it's all working out for Nos. Good on you, Jay.

Shotgun and a baseball bat and hunt them all down !! Use the shotgun to get them out of the tree then finsh them off with a good hit to the nose! That how we kill them when we where kids .

Use a stick that way the quills come off the porkpine and you can eat it after

Glad to see Nos is doing well, that's one of the worst case of porky quills I've seen for a dog. You can tell he has a off the charts prey drive, he obviously went in for more after the first quills, which would've driven off a dog with lesser drive.

Have you given a thought to pet health insurance? I know it sounds wierd to some but I bet a dog like Nos cost a good chunk of $$$$ up front, then add training, feed, misc bills and you have a dog worth $$$$$. I look at it as protecting my investment. With a hunting dog you can expect to see more vet bills in the future, it's inevitable.

Glad to see he made it out alright.

Jeeze, 20th of May was a while ago... Any updates on Nos?

Thanks for the concern for Nos, he is well & to date we have removed 55 additional quills following the surgery with the vet!!! He seems no worse for the wear & has recently set his mind to ridding the neighbourhood of cats...

I swear, he is the best hunting dog I have had to date, drive & determination should have been his middle names!!!

Nos certainly is hard on the head, heart & pocketbook, ha ha ha, BUT we love him!

Cheers

Our Golden/Duck Toller cross cost us 3500 bucks before he was 8 months old, swallowing a small piece of corn cob that someone left out around a campfire down the way. Got lodged in his intestines and he was slowly starving to death. Had to have major surgery to get it out.

I am getting my first dog in a few weeks, 3/4 toller 1/4 golden lab,
I can't afford vet bills like that!
I hope she gets a lot of her dad in her (beautiful full duck toller), I find anything mixed with lab gets a lot of lab.

Unbelievable amount of quills. Nos will probably try to pull this stunt again. Mine did (Lab) although they were minor compared to that mess and I could pull them myself. A shock collar might not be a bad idea. I am wondering what my current pup will do when he sees his first porky. Good luck.

Then your choices are;

A: Watch her carefully and take excellent care of her. Train her well (get classes if necessary) and if she puts anything in her mouth that doesn't belong or can become a foreign object blockage get it out immediately before she swallows it. <<Why do I sence a "that's what she said" line coming out of that??

B: Pet health insurance.

C: Don't get a dog. Can't afford the time or money it takes to properly care for your animal it's probably best for you and her if you quit while you're ahead.

Otherwise I hope you enjoy your new animal. Dogs, especially puppies will teach you whole new levels of patience.

HAHAHA. That is sig material right there.

We spent $2000 ($1000 per knee) on knee surgery for ours. Granted, we didn't know the other knee was going to blow as soon as she healed from the first surgery, at which point we were already committed.

After reading this I've made my decision, I'll spend the $900. for a MRI on my ankle to find out what's wrong with it so I can get it fixed and be able to continue hunting.

Good thing my wife does not have a PAL. (my guns are all locked up)

My worst nightmare for Molly (English Setter). I could only hope that she pointed instead of going for the kill! Its just not possible, nor desired to keep a medium-ranging pointer in close like a flusher.

You're lucky the porc didn't get his abdomen. I've heard stories of those quills migrating and causing big time life threatening complications.
