working on a new build in 7mm cal. I shoot a Browning Abolt 7mm-wsm and love it . It shoots under .5 moa at 700yds. The smith thats doing the build mentioned a 7mm-300wsm - longer neck, shorter more efficient case.
so the question is.
7mm wsm or 7mm-300wsm
is the 7mm-300 worth a new set of dies and the hassle of necking down 300 brass.

What 6mmShooter said!

.5 moa @ 700 yards is pretty darn impressive in my books, both for that rifle and the shooter behind it.

You've got a shooter in that caliber alread, so I would be looking at something completely different!

Good luck with the new build.

Why another 7wsm.
I have 3 guns in the 7mm cal, 2 in 7mm rem mag and the A bolt 7wsm. I always thought the Rem Mags were tops until I picked up the 7wsm. The load development for the 23"barrel with BOSS was simple, just pick the charge and tune it with the boss and seating depth.
I'm sacrificing 1 of the rem mags for the action for the new build, so I'll still only have 3.
I'm looking for 1000 yds or better, not sure why , I don't shoot in any comps so I quess its just to say I hit the pinical.
Imo the 7mm is the best alround cal , its nice to shoot with or without a brake, a wide selection of bullets , and it will kill any animal we have allthough I perfer the 300 rum for the bigger stuff.
The 7-300wsm would be neet just because of the fun factor.
Any opinions on barrels, a broughton is 4 months away, a shilen is 3 weeks..

I use win brass, even if you have to cull 4 or 5 cases out of 50 its still 50% cheaper . never used the more expensive brass.
I wonder how hard it is to find a neck die for the 7-300.

The RP .300WSM brass makes some excellent brass for the 7WSM, especially compared to the crap that WW is putting out for the 7WSM these days... ;)

Even the WW .300WSM brass is miles ahead, and Norma is always nice to work with.

both are good cartridges but you won't keep .5moa for long. that cartridge is good for only about 700-800 rounds. you will probably pull hair out keeping track of the lands. personally never fancied the abolts for building from but if its working for you then shoot it.

I'm not using the A bolt for the build, I was planing on using 1 of the old Rem's for the action and have a barrel chambered in 7wsm, But I see a lot of guys using the Savage action and prechamered barrels. Thats a nice system.

I have a 7WSSM. A Remington action was used. The barrel is a 7mm polygonally rifled pac-nor super match with a 1:8" twist in stainless.
The rifle was built around the 180 Berger VLD. It's not a velocity king. What it does is essentially give you a 7mm with 6BR characteristics. IE it won't burn barrels and is very accurate.

The parent case is a 25WSSM.

44.0 Varget 2750fps with Berger 180 VLD. It's pretty efficient. 2800 is very possible. I'm going off the previous owners numbers.

Just another direction/thought.
