Bass Pro Calgary requires registration for Canada and the BATF/ USA!

I just bought a gun there today and didn't see a BATF form...

I purchased a pellet gun. They presented me with a ledger and entered my info. They also had a second form on an 8.5X11 sheet of paper. It was for the Corporate office and named the BATF in the body. It required a signature. If you did not have to sign this sheet please let me know. I complained bitterly but the gun was a promised thing so I continued with the sale but told them I would not be back.

I did not make this up for those with doubts. The counterman informed me of the connection between the Bass Pro head office and BATF compliance. He also said the ledger was required by the Govt.of Alberta.

I'm wondering if I didn't ask enough questions. I did fill out a form like that but I don't recall seeing BATF on it. I did ask what it was for and he said it was for their records but said it stays there and isn't sent off anywhere.
I don't know if they're blowing smoke but in my opinion I don't think we should have to fill out that much info.
Also, I didn't mean to put an angry face on my prior post. I guess that's what I get for typing on a phone.

Vlad see post #38 from a Calgary Bass Pro rep on the attached link. You did sign a BATF form. He describes it in detail. The thread got me spanked bad partially due to an error in the original post were I accidentally called the air rifle a non-PAL. I've been researching Weihrauch air rifles for a purchase and fat fingered my post.

The posts of some were quite vicious before I could get back to clarify as I'm on vacation with my kids and just popped the forum open and found my mistake.

I have decided that I will not post further or comment on this topic and detail why on the above link.

Someone mentioned it earlier in this thread - any store that is know to have BS practices such as this, should be rewarded with more of our visits. Begin the purchase, and when they produce the form, get majorly indignant, and make some noise before storming out. Stores don't learn from people shopping elsewhere - what they don't know won't hurt them. They do learn from multiple noisy lost sales, followed up by letters to the store, head office, and media (if useful).

If you've been following the SunNews dogged coverage of this CFO/Backdoor-registry debacle, can you imagine if news of this BATF form hit Ezra? He'd probably visit the nearest store with a full video crew, and try to buy a rifle.

Stores are like kids - don't ignore them, educate them :)

Exactly, the store needs to know that asking for information that the law does not require , or having to fill out forms that aren't required by law, cost them sales.

I used to work there. I did special orders, sent guns for repairs, put guns on the rack and that sort of thing.

The form where the employee in that AO thread (and I know who that is) is wrong when he said it is a BATF form. It is not a BATF form, it's a Bass Pro disclaimer saying that the associate told you haw to work the gun and if you blow yourself up it's not Bass Pro's fault. Some associates call it a BATF form because there is a slot on it to write in the 4473 number which is not applicable in Canada. I'll repeat, it is in no way a BATF form nor does it go to any government agency in any country. It is nothing more than a disclaimer. They keep them locked in storage and if Bass Pro gets sued because bubba didn't know how to work his gun, they would drag out that form.

The only BATF form we ever used (and myself and 1 other associate would be the only guys ever using them because only two of us could special order) was a BATF form called a DSP-83 which we used to do a special order coming from the states. It was not needed on a pellet gun or shotgun and only if we were pulling it direct from the states outside our normal licence. It did not require any personal information beyond name, signature and date signed.

As for where we got our guns, some came from Canadian distributors and some came direct from the US.

I worked for the Vaughan store for a year and a half.

We were trained to cross the BATF line off as not applicable. It was never used and wasn't supposed to be. The form was for covering their buts in the event some moron in the states hurt himself or others not knowing how to operate the firearm safely. As for this paperwork being there...it has helped in warrantee a lot of firearms.

For the record, I accept no collection of registry like data by a government agency. So the ledgers have to go.

Record keeping for the purpose of warrantee confirmation, kept by a private NGO under the Canadian privacy act holds better in my conscience than a government that changes ideologies with the wind.

My 2 cents...

I've never had to sign a disclaimer form when buying a gun, and never will. So I guess I will not be buying from Bass Pro.
