Mini30 performance with milsurp

no.
light primer strikes will happen.

Thanks for the information.

I must admit that I do not like to clean a firearm after every single use. I thought that a mini30 in stainless steel might be an ideal solution.

I'm sure that I'm not the first person to appreciate the irony that the stainless steel version of the mini30 appears a first glance to be the ideal firearm to resist the corrosive effects of inexpensive milsurp, but, upon closer scrutiny, learn that its firing system is not designed for milsurp's harder primers.

Too bad.

I'm surprised that Ruger has not addressed this rather obvious shortcoming in their rifle.

Don't get me wrong, it will work. I had 1 out of 5 rounds with a light strike. some members have had less, some more.

The ranch rifle was not designed to shoot surplus... better to just run soft point commercial or handload.

also, (now this could be internet bs. I've never seen one way or another) that the ruger has a bore diameter of .308 as opposed to the .310/.311 that 858 and sks have.

Also, the corrosive ammo, regardless of the "stainless" action of the mini - still has to be thoroughly flushed out of the gas system, bore and bolt.

Older minis have a 308 bore the newer ones have .310/.311. Surplus is not the best to run in these but MFS seems to work pretty good and is not too much more then surplus.

It depends on what type of milsurp your using; I fired Czech steel cased stuff that had at least a 1 in 5 FTF. I recently got brass cased Romanian surplus that was much better - 2 FTF in 200 rounds so far. I've heard that spring kits are available to enable harder primer strikes, but there have been mixed reviews on it.

Despite that, I love the Mini-30 for hunting and plinking....just gotta find the right ammo.
