Unfinished boyds gunstock. Updated

love it guys... my m14 boyds shipped today. excited about doing it myself but still nervous too. so after applying the first coat, upon subsequent coats the boyds video recommended rubbing the oil in with wet sandpaper or something, any of you guys do that? people say wait like 15 minutes and rub the excess oil off with rags...going with the grain. is that right? btw you guys look like you did a great job on your stocks. Also, why are you guys ordering pure tung oil off the net, is it hard to find in canada or something??

Lee valley carry pure tung oil and they have great service, you cant really mess up it is a very forgiving finish.

I just put a coat, wait 15-30 min, wipe with cheese cloth, let dry 24 or 48 hours then repeat.

P.S. Grab a can of compressed air and hose it down after sanding it down with steel whool.

Where did you get that sling? looks nice. Also any custom sanding etc to get that bipod mounted? i really wanna put a harris on mine

Aww.....Now I want a wood stock too. They sure look nice when theyre done properly. Cant help thinking its got to improve resale value when we die and the kids sell everything....cos we all know theyre just waiting eh LOL.
I know Im being lazy now, just got back from the range :)))), but where would a guy get one of these fine Boyds stocks ?
Got some cleaning to do...:)

Okay I found em...are we all buying the M1 stock ? I dont see M-14 or M-305 listed and I guess we keep our handguards..........I gotta do this quick while shes out.

keep the handgaurd unless you want to put in a seperate order for a wood one, wich would look nice, but i like the look of the fiberglass/plastic one

do you mean that ugly hole on the side of the stock? some stocks come like that because if they were automatics they have a select fire switch.

No not the selector cut out, this round hole in the stock below the receiver.

The 'Ugly' cutout is the stock liner nut, there is one on each side to hold the stock liner into the rifle, the action/trigger group attach to this in a basic M14. The picture on the bottom is my M14, the stock is a NM and is inletted for glass bedding, hence you do not need a stock liner, and there is no need for the stock liner bolt!

Im going to start the finishing on my boyds unfinished stock tonight, and i have heard a few suggestions about how to finish it. The boyds website says do the first coat by hand with a glove or whatever, followed by after coats that include a wet sanding directly after apply each coat. In the video they are using tru-oil, do you think it will really make a difference in application if im using tung oil??

Consider using marine grade linseed oil, it soaks into the wood. plain linseed oil stays on the surface of the wood. That way you need less coats and don't have to oil stock as often. It also protects the wood from the elements. Have used it for years, as my guns go out on boats.

I got some lucky this morning :) Went into the shop to get some ammo and came out with a wood stock :)) 50 bucks and she just needs a bit of TLC, no cracks and only one little ding...........Wheres me sandpaper..
Will post before and after pics later ...if I can remember how to post pics still.
I have no idea what it is it may be Chinese it may be Walnut, the only thing Im certain of is it aint plastic........I should buy a lottery ticket today :)
All the info on this thread is gonna come in real handy, thanks guys.

If you got yourself a usgi stock for 50 bucks thats a great deal.

Pictures are easy, use photobucket.

Plug the digicam to your pc and put them in the desktop so they are easy to find, then upload in photobucket.

Copy and paste link here and you are done !

It come out a little darker that I wanted but I'm much happier with it. It's a real nice look to a crappy stock.
