Whats better for bear protection, flint or obsidian spear points?
A buddy of mine got drunk and rolled a golf kart this weekend, broke his foot. While in the hospital, himself and friends met a chatty nurse who also treated the bear attach victim. Apparently he was in high spirits and made light of the timing. Before everyone starts carrying their 44mag to the john, it sounded like yogi wont have the opportunity to try strike again.

It is certainly true that black bears are responsible for the majority of bear inflicted injuries to people across North America. Yet these guys have no such reputation.
I had my "bear repellent" with me for the May Long weekends camping/fishing trip. There were lots of bears around, but none ventured into the campsites. They must not have liked the loud music and smell of beer.
Always hope I never have to shoot one, rather him just go his way and I go mine. That being said, I'd rather have my rifle with me and not need it, than need it and not have it. Same principle as a first aid kit! I couldn't imagine how I would feel if a bear grabbed one of my friends and I was powerless to stop it.

Just saw the TV news cast, no mention of the rifle type nor calibre that saved the pensioner's life! the old boy is marked up with some gonna be battle scars, cuts and bruises, but nothing too terribley serious. Thank God there was a gun handy!

Glad to hear he's gonna be OK. Bey he takes a crap with a rifle next time.

Seriously though I am glad he survived the attack. Black bears are not the clowns some people take them to be.
Yep, went camping with a couple friends this weekend, according to one of them there were a lot of Black Bears in the area, but naturally he wasn't worried because "they just forage for...berries and stuff."
Had a bit of lecturing to do after that. It's unlikely but it happens.

If you dont factor in intentions, I'd wager moose on highways have killed far more people then bears ever have or will.

naw, couldn't be! at least I'm praying so. I'm betting that the 63 yr old shooter was from the old school and had a 308 or maybe a 30-06. Now there are a couple of real bear defence cartridges! right?

I think I saw a documentary that talked about this, and if I'm not mistaken, deer are responsible for more death than any other animal here. That is of course, as another poster mentioned, if you take out intent. Deer on highways kill more people than any bear has. Lol maybe we should start a "highway-deer defense" thread. Anything other than a 1 Ton with full steel cage and spiked tires won't do!
