Remington 300 Ultra Mag factory ammo -- somewhat impressed!

Why not?

Was at the range last night with a friend who was shooting his 300 Ultra Mag. Now, I am not an Ultra Mag fan, but I was certainly impressed when he fired some 180 gr factory ammo over the Oehler.

180 gr Scirocco averaged 3372 fps out of his 26" Remington 700.

However, the accuracy was not too good, 2-3" at 100 yd. His handloads were much better, 3235 fps, and close to MOA with 190 Nosler Competition bullets.

Maybe you will get rid of your slow 9.3x62 and replace it with one of these fast killers.... :)

No point to velocity without accuracy. Blow up meat up close and miss at range. At least Remington isn't making baby factory loads.

That is what really impressed me. Most factory ammo I have chronographed doesn't come close to the advertised velocity. Many times it will be 150-200 fps slower.

Most rifles don't have 26" barrels, of course, but that close to 3400 was quite a surprise!

"Maybe" is an awfully big word there. :D

The handloads went MOA...so it appears not to be the shooter.

Yes, and he did it more than once. Also went three straight on the pigs and turkeys. Missed two rams. Even fast bullets drop pretty quick at 500 meters (545 yd).

So Ted, do you have a .30-378 on order now? Of course even a .45/70 shoots "flat" out to 545 if its zeroed to hit the point of aim at that range.

Jason, have been there for a while with my old mid-sixties 270 Wby: 130 gr Partitions at more than 3500 fps, and 150 A-Frames at 3200+ shoot amazingly flat, and kill like lightning. Sighted in three inches high at 100 yd, the 130s are less tha seven inches low at 411 yd (385 meters) on our silouhette range.

Best part of all, both loads still shoot very close to an inch out of the old girl. :)

Old school Ted !! i love it

but i hear ya, you can only push them so fast lol

its hard to put a handle on the effieciency hey? you think 25% more powder should do more when 35% more powder ony get you 100 fps faster than the old stuff lol !

ya i love the wbys, play with a 30-378 and 300, but still keep the pretty girl lose to my chest n the 257 !
