Shotgun suggestions

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a fun pump-action 12-gauge shotgun with a solid feel (more metal, less plastic -- I don't mind weight) and awesome build quality (no rattling). Primarily, I'm interested in shooting sports and bird hunting (will need steel shot). 28" barrel would be ideal. I don't know if I'll need 3-1/2" shells yet, but I'd be willing to spend a little extra to have that option. I'd prefer to have the action release be easy to reach, understanding that this is more of a personal preference. I'm right-handed. No price limit, as long as it's good value for the money. Something around $800 is fine as long as it's worth it.

What would you suggest?

Not sure you're going to find a pump that doesn't have any rattle... Maybe other guys will chime in & suggest one with less rattle?

My main waterfowl gun is a semi auto Baikal MP153, my Benelli Nova (pump with 'slop'...) is my back up gun. BOTH are 3.5 inch chambered guns, I personally want the 3.5 inch capability when I am after waterfowl.

Cheers
Jay

Thanks for the quick reply, Jay!

Not to derail the thread, but the Baikal MP153 looks like one heck of a gun... just watched a video of a guy shooting it after dipping it in water and mud. Are they easy to get in Canada? And how much?

On the topic of pumps:

I've been doing a lot of reading and there seem to be 2 most popular options matching what I'm looking for:

- Benelli SuperNova
- Browning BPS Hunter or Stalker

Based on reviews, it looks like the SuperNova would be my top choice, with the only major complaint being the cost and availability of parts.

I'll keep watching the thread for any other suggestions.

1: Remington 870 Wingmaster
2: Browning BPS Hunter
3: Ithaca Model 37 Featherlight

The 3 1/2" shotshell is overrated in my opinion but if you believe you need it (or others convince you that you need it)...well...it's your money so do as you please!

Of the 3 listed above, only the BPS is currently produced in 3 1/2" versions. The 870 Wingmaster was chambered for it but has been discontinued for some years now, however, I have seen 4 NIB examples sitting in gun shops in the last 2 years.

Winchester sxp. They are chambered in 3 or 3 1/2 inch. I own a 3 inch and it's a pretty awesome shotgun! If I had a larger budget, I probably would have bought a benelli super nova, or just splurged and got a Winchester sx3 semi auto.

I also got an SXP a few weeks ago. Its the 3.5 waterfowl camo version. I am extremely happy with it so far, especially that I only paid 450$ for it. I also comes with 3 chokes which is not always the case in this price range.

Good luck ... lots of good guns out there to chose from.

Pump with least rattle ithaca 37

I can say the baikal 153mp is an amazing gun for the money. Mine eats everything from 3.5"mag to my 7/8oz skeet loads. I just wish they made a 2 3/4" only version. The 153mp is easy to find in wood and blue. Black synthetic and camo versions

No worries, & Gagnon, a site sponsor, carries the Baikal MP153. To me, the best one is the synthetic stocked model. I don't like wood on a waterfowl gun & I don't like camo guns 'cause you scratch the hell out of the 'finish' when using them hard.

As for 'needing' the 3.5 inch chamber. It allows me to toss MORE pellets when waterfowling, it's as simple as that.

New 870s are crap. Buy an old one and your golden, otherwise run.

Supernova's have a long stroke IMO. Not something I want needing quick follow up shots.

Bps guns are tight, short stroked, smooth as a butter, and bottom eject to boot.

Browning's BPS gets my vote as current best pump gun.

I say a BPS hunter as well. The new ithaca are nice and compatible with steel ammo, but I think they are over priced for what you get.

I think the time comes for a semi, it will have to be the baikal mp 153 for me. Hearing great things about it, wonder if there is a tube extension for 5 3.5" shells for it

I love the 870 platform so I always thought I would get an 11-87 3.5", but I hear of too many reliability issues/not feeding

Personally, I do NOT want 3.5" in my waterfowl guns... I'm too old to be slinging that much steel (almost said lead, old habits)... our turkey guns are 3.5", but I can handle that for one or two shots... three quick 3.5 inchers and I need a tube of A5-35 and a nap! :D

P.S - you can't go too far wrong with an 870.
