I have two boys 5 and 7 and they love coming to the range and shooting the .22 but my .22's are a little big for for them. So I starting looking around and saw the Henry Mini Bolt Youth, which seemed like it would be great ( WSS seems to be the only place that has one ?) and then I looked at Prophet River ( they are great !) and they have these Cricket rifles which also seem good as well. Marlin makes a youth model as well.

So does anyone have a recommendations or experience with these youth models ? I like the single shot bolt action style but a bolt action repeater would be ok too.

Thanks

when I was a kid, I thought bolt actions like my dad's were super lame, and wanted a semi-auto with an intensity that only a little kid can muster up. My uncle had a super sweet AR-7 style survival 22lr semi with a 7-shot clip that was pretty awesome.

Of course, now I realize the error of my former ways, and love nothing better than a fine bolt action, with deep glossy bluing and a classy walnut stock

3 rifles I'd suggest... Of course my top pick is a Cooey single shot. But the Savage Cub/Rascal is an excellent option.. And then there's the "Cricket".. I plan on buying a Cricket this summer just to pop in the gun cabinet.. The savage isn't cheap but mine is a tank and is tiny and easy to pack in a back pack and such. The ones you mentioned are all great, if I were you I'd let your kids decide which they wanted, so they can really feel that they are part of the firearm community :)

The t/c single shot is accurate and simple to use, good value. It has to be manually cocked everytime so it is a extra step to shoot which is nice for keeping the child on task of shooting.

The browning bl-22 micro is the best youth model I have played with.

The crickett is junk.

Savage is a savage, they are good and reliable.

Ok so it seems to me the Cricket is a no go. Lots of people ( but one) like the Marlin and and Savage Rascal. I showed a bunch of guns to the boys and they seem to like the syn, stainless. I notice no one is really say much about the Henry ?

Does anyone know of a dealer on the site ?

I am glad I posted this, thanks for all the help.

I found that my average sized 5 year old needed a shorter LOP than the Savage Cub, which is very short to start with.

I have to admit the Henry with a LOP of 11 1/2" is about the smallest and the one I like the best so far. I am trying to find a savage rascal in SS.

I looked at them all and ended up getting my 6 yr old the Stevens Cadet, which is the Savage Cub without the Accutrigger.
It's a great, solid little gun, the only plastic is the trigger bow.
The peep sight is very adjustable and easy to use, I believe it's a Williams.
It has a loading ramp that makes it easy to feed.
Very happy with it for the $150 I paid.

Did not care for the plastic sights on the Crickett and the Henry.
The Marlin, to me, seemed blocky and a little rough.
The T/C's buttstock has a weird shape and did not fit the lttle guy too well, hard to line up the sights.

^^^^ Now that is some good advice. The picture is worth a thousand words as he looks just a little bigger than my 7 yr old.

I was going to buy the Henry today but I didn't know about the plastic sights. I would not like that. Thanks.

I going to search out a Savage and will post where I got it.

I know you said bolt action, but the Marlin 795 semi auto is inexpensive .22 to start out with.... 130-150 at various stores... got mine at WSS and I think it was 130ish... I am a smaller guy which = short arms... Have a Remington 870 shotgun which doesn't fit me well... but the marlin fits me just fine. I know it's comparing apples to oranges, but would throw it in for comparison...

My 10 year old son uses that and fits him fine
