how to remove it? I F****accidentally scratched it it a brass yellow key. It's not deep scratch. It's about 1.5 cm long. I rub it with cloth and my finger but it is still there. :(( I used the lubricant oil and it didn't work. The finish is nitron btw.

Can someone please help me????

I've got a couple of light scratches on my .500 smith in stainless. I would also like to hear how to remove these.

How many threads will there be on this?
Is the finish scratched or is it a brass smear? If it is the latter, try bore cleaner.

Your best bet is probably to get a paint pen of a colour that's close and touch it up with that. Nirton finish is hard to do, requiring a nitrogen filled firnace charged with high frequency electricity.

If you actually scratched the coating and damaged it, about all you could do is experiment with something to try to fill it in and cover it up. Try a black felt marker if the scratch is down to bare metal.

You can't. I work with Nitro steel every day in a hydraulic repair shop. Once the surface has a mar in it its permanent.
The surface layer is soft but 1 micron down it is 65-70 rockwell.
It doesn't efect its functionality just its appearance. 1 micron is almost immeasurable.
To fix you would need a heated plasma furnace with a nitrogen atmosphere but you would need to strip the old finish first which permeates the metal like case hardening for about .010"-.020" thus leaving the metal undersized, and nitro steel does not build up a coating thickness like chrome plating does. It infuses the surface steel with nitrogen, oxygen, iron ions.

When I gave my stainless barrel a safe ding, I used 400 grit to clean it up. On your SW I would suggest trying it under the grip first, and see how it goes.

A scratch is a scratch I'm afraid. Nitron is a surface firearms finish - and chances are it's there for good if the finish layer has been scratched off. Do you have a pic of the scratch? You say it was done with a brass key. Don't know how comparativley hard Nitron is, but maybe the brass is softer and the scratch is just brass residue on the surface?

Many brass keys are chrome plated....besides I've marked Nito steel with a dry shop rag. The top layer is soft and easily marked but the coating persists throughout the base metals surface to a depth of about 10 to 20 thou. Good luck putting a scratch in rc70 steel with a brass yey 20+ thou deep.

You have probably permenently scratched the finish, but the nitro coating underneath will prevent rust. When your gun is all a light grey color and semi shiny showing surface wear, the nitro cating will still prevent rust unlike a blued finish in the same visual state.

Is it actually a scratch, or just a brass smudge? If the latter, scrub it off with a suitable copper solvent.

That said, after a few thousand presentations from the holster, one little scratch will seem trivial.

Stainless, brass or chromed (or any uncoated metal), depending on the depth of the scratch you could try a rag (or polish wheel on a dremel) and jewelers rouge.

With painted surface you could use cold blueing or as suggested permanent marker.

Parkerized, well with a parkerized finish I wouldn't even notice a scratch unless its a real "dusey". But I guess the only way would be to strip and reapply for that part???

picture would be helpful...

in any case, if your gun is in stainless steel, it will be an easy fix to buff it out with 400 -600 grit sandpaper.

be careful if you use a buffing wheel, like some suggested, it might become too glossy.

I will post some pictures soon.

It is stainless steel with nitron finish just to be clear. It looks like the finish of the key smeared to the frame but I tried to buff it with a cloth and just my finger, it didn't work.
I think I need some chemical.

Ok ok let me clarify. The key is the key from the trigger lock that I bought from CT. The key is yellow so I just assumed it is brass. :p To be honest with you I have no idea if it is brass or something else, but it is yellow.

It looks like a smudge/smear but it didn't come off when i rub it off with a piece of cloth.
