hoping those in the know can answer this for me.

im thinking about shortening a factory shorty to sub 17" to make a psuedo-socom .. im going to be using a Dlask gaslock system, and can have a brake custom made.. but i dont want it to be too much longer than the regular socoms..

so what will - if anything - need to be done to the gas system ?

Note: im in New Zealand.. its perfectly legal

Damn you. I want to move there.

Nothing ;) you should ge good to go. It "might" become load sensetive, but otherwise, no mods to do.

OK a further question for those who load and have experience with the shorter variety of M14s ..

Im thinking about making a plinking load .. lighter pill for a little less recoil and a little more velocity.
do you recommend a faster burning powder or a slower burning powder.. im really thinking about creating enough pressure to cycle the action with the cut down barrel..

im a total loading newbie..so i have NFI

Hungry did some 110 grain's that are supper soft maybe he could repost the load for us if he remebers.
Also is an inch and a half really that much to big of a barrel for ya??? If so why wouldn't you just get a SOCOM that comes already done up but to 16 inch's?

why wouldnt i get a socom?

$300 vs $2000

thats why

for $500 NZD ill have it modified with a SOCOM style brake custom made .. cant beat that

Cool.
Just didn't see what the 1.5 inches would do for ya. Considering it would cost ya $500 to chop and thread it.
Try powder IMR 4064 with CCI the hard primer one's I froget the number now. I think it's CCI #34.
Are you going to post pic's when your short, shorty is done???

Ahhh the lighter load approach ? :D I like fast burning powders. The M14 and the .308 were a match designed for each other and so was ball powder, specifically ball powders like Win 748, H335, and now my favorite and super cheap powder WC835 at around $ 14.00 per lb at Higginson Powders (when you buy amounts of 7 lbs or more) :)

I toss in about 41 grains of the ball powder behind the Hornady Vmax 110 gr boolit. Right now I'm using up some Speer TNT 125 gr boolits with that 41 gr to 44 gr range of ball powder. Lots of noise; NO recoil! :D

The recoil amount is a big joke!

Have fun! I hope those washers I left you in Rotorua, NZ are getting some use! Now if only we coulda lit up some 'roos in NZ last July when we met!

Cheers,
Barney

Barney we dont have Roo's in NZ :D .. some stinky little wallabies maybe

thanks for the load info! ill get it done :D

no i meant $500 as a total cost of the rifle, chopped threaded and braked to clone a socom

you're forgetting the 3" of flash hider on the end of the 18.5" barrel.. so all in all probably gonna shorten it up about 4"
HAHAHA!!!
I frogot that you guy's use a can when you are shooting your rifle.

Hungry seriously 41grains of WC835 using a 110 grain Vmax???
What type of accuracy are we talking about here? 4 moa?
