Good hunting ammo for SKS

I would like to use my SKS as a bush gun. Before anyone gets a little nervous, I do know the rifles limitations. I think 2.5" MOA is ethical enough to use the SKS within 100 yards on deer. My question is regarding which hunting ammo cycles best in an SKS, I've never tried anything but surplus FMJ. I have my eye on the PRVI and S&B soft points, are these good choices for my SKS? How well do these cycle? Any FTL or FTE? Any suggestions? Thanks.

They are both good brands, I havent shot PRVI but all my red rifles like S&B. It is loaded hotter than mislurp so no worries about cycling. Look into MFS soft point too, same deal but dirtier powder. Theyre all 123 gr. @ about 2450 fps or so. Out to 150 yds they have all the oomph needed to cleanly take a deer. I like the MFS because its steel cased so no worries if you cant find the spent casings. Its also much cheaper. Be sure to try them at the range first as POI will be different than surplus.

I fired couple of boxes of S&B through my two sks's. Modern, clean ammo. Groups a little better than surplus FMJ. Never got to hunt with it though.

I ran 100 rounds of S&B soft point through an SKS last summer with no problems. Another 40 rounds on a cold afternoon in March at the range, again, no problems.

Federal has soft point rounds for it too, seems to be a few options for you.

down south most X39 is commercial but its hard to find up here. All the major brands make it, its surprising that we dont have access to it. Maybe once the surplus starts drying up importers will find it a viable investment but right now I think the price of surplus makes commercial X39 pretty unpopular.

Thanks for the info. Is there a big performance difference between PSP (pointed soft point) versus SP (soft point)? Or is it negligible to my needs?

Don't these fragment? My deer is not a varmint sir! Also, it would not been fun crunching your teeth on the fragments.

any bullet will fragmentate if impacted at high enough velocity. V Max are a plain lead core poly tipped hollow point, at the impact velocity the SKS generates these will expand but not fragmentate.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that is because of the US export ban on anything 'military caliber'

There used to be a ballistics gelatin test on Brassfetcher.com with a load from a company called D&S Manufacturing utilizing the Hornady V-Max.

Unfortunately I cannot find the images, as they seem to have been removed from brassfetcher, but the whole tract was littered with fragments.

Talked about and quoted here:

Note the quote in post #6.

Here's some info on a Hornady TAP load.

Barrel: 18.5"
Muzzle Velocity: 2218 fps
Retained Weight: 77.2 gr

I'd rather not be chewing on the other 45.8 grains.
