There seem to be quite a few in the USA...

That's two! :)
Definitely more original configuration pieces in the US, but given the number of gun owners and military collectors there compared to in Canada, the numbers are still pretty small, IMO.
I'm waiting to see if there is a "last batch" of RC k98s ever destined for North America, or if this is just a rumour.

If I ever want an all matching K98, I will be buying from the States and importing it. Cheaper that way if you look around in person for a good deal.

Last time I saw K98's and G33/40's in a shop in the US they were much less than here. The K98's were about $700 a pop and the G33/40's were about $900. This was two years ago.

They arent that anymore. Any matching gun will run you $1000 plus down there. Alot of new collectors.

Its because american troops were allowed and encouraged to take stuff home. We were not allowed tgo bring home rifles. Also such a huge market thats were most of the impoerted refurbs and originals end up

According to Sergey at westrifle, he says there are some left, but quality is lower and Ivan wants premium dollar for then as he knows everyone in NA wants one! haha

I saw a vid on you tube awhile ago, and this group of relic hunters were at a huge manson etc, and after the battle of Bastone, after the clean up, all the firearms laying atound the area where dumped in this huge well, and they were talking the gunds out of it. its a deep well and at least 20 feet across

there all original , but there just as dicked with down there, restamped, peened, reblued, sanded, unless you can see it in person, its a coin toss. big coin in some cases.

There's still lots of K98's in Canada.
They just didn't vanish and go away.
Many get hoarded away by collectors.
Some don't see the light of day until there is an estate sale.
Some get traded away on a phone call, never to see the EE or newspaper.
So in the mean time and in between time, keep changing your under wear
daily, because K98's don't change hands daily, unlike the SKS or SVT40 that do! :D

That's true but you can also buy from known collectors who know what they have and what its worth and have reputations in the collecting community. You might not get a deal but hopefully you won't get ripped off either.

The other thing which can substantially make a rifle more valuable is proof of providence in the USA. As CanadianAR stated Americans were allowed to bring back souvenirs and I believe there were forms for them to do so. I have not seen any such documentation for K98k rifles in Canada unless they were imported from the USA with the documents as well. Can anyone comment on proof of providence in Canada? (and I'm not talking about a letter saying my granddad brought this home from the war signed by his grandson).

It's Buy the rifle, not the story. The firearm does the talking when disassembled as to whether it's legit or not. (50's import marks, renumbering,...)

US Capture Papers may be nice, but I wouldn't pay any more for them.
They are Faking Capture Papers as well.

I think all firearms were smuggled back in to Canada after WW2 in duffle bags from Lugers, Rifles and MG's. Lot's of Duffle Cut Rifles in Canada too.

I don't know if you will see any weapons listed on any Canadian Document and this might be why. Here's what I was told right from the source:

A Canadian Soldier found a German HT Sniper rifle after the war in Germany and wanted to bring it back on his trip home. His Officer told him if he was caught with it he would have to spent another year or two overseas (army of occupation). So he threw the rifle into a lake.

Getting caught was the deterant with the penalty. But, many still brought them back.

Not just throwing rifles into the lake. Same with pistols on the ships coming back home. Halifax harbour is supposedly littered with pistols thrown overboard. My father threw his over when the MPs came on board. Not worth getting caught and being sent back.

Problem with reading the marks on the rifle is that if its doesn't add up then you're stuck unless the seller makes good. They are faking stamps on rifles too. Witness the fake SS rifles (or helmets or daggers or...). Fake cartouches on Garands etc. Fake waffenamts on Soviet milsurps. (There was a suspected one on CGN)

A fellow in the USA was running a business applying cartouches on refurbished Garands. He had sets of the real dies. This was/is a sore point in the U.S. collecting community.

It really pays to know who your dealing with when it comes to spending big $$$ on a highly sought after firearm.

Best to get lots of good closeup pics first, post them on the appropriate gun forums, then decide. Always get a 3 day inspection period.
