Heading West for Upland Hunting?

I am wondering whether anyone here heads west for upland hunting?
I have made the long drive from here in the Eastern Townships of Quebec to Southeast Saskatchewan for 4 of the last 5 seasons.
2011 was very poor.... Severe Spring weather ruined nesting and even killed off brood birds.I had planned to stay quite a while ,but after 5 days of finding virtually zero huns ,I packed up our two Setters and headed home.

Low spots were still lakes right into October....Nothing like that in last 100 years.

It may well take a few good (ideal) nesting seasons to repopulate.

Anyone have any ideas/plans for a GOOD Western hunt(Huns,Sharptails or Pheasants) for this 2012 season?

Why not try northern Ontario for Sharptails, Eastern Ontario for huns and Pelee Island or Wolfe Island for pheasants? You could throw in some excellent waterfowl and fall turkey if you planned properly.

Funny, I've never seen any huns around here, ever, lots of Ruffed Grouse though. I've had many people tell me there's a ton of huns around, yet to see one

I think that Pheasants on Pelee and Wolfe are preserve birds.

While the Hun population is not like that found out west you can definitely find huntable numbers.

Wolfe has plenty of wild pheasants, Pelee birds are all released.

Upland birds as a whole are doing well in Ontario, wild pheasants are starting to turn up again in many places and the Huns are in greater numbers than in many years.

Speaking with a friend who made the trip last year he said that the bird numbers were up. No trouble killing limits of anything.

Huns are a well kept secret. I personally would not reveal locations because they are very prone to over-harvest by their nature.

Well I've got a bird dog on the way, she's going to need something to chase!! lol

Huns took a very bad hit two winters ago across much of S Sask.
But some pockets of birds were spared. I have heard that last winter was better, and so it won't be quite so grim this year.

I'll confirm the bad news for upland in south western sask. Very hard hit in 2011. I have not yet seen any signs of recovery. I did not shoot a single upland bird last fall. First time I have ever sat out on upland season, but there just was not any birds for the most part. Waterfowl was another story altogether......
