AR Build - Precision VS. CQB

I am looking at building my second AR and was looking to eventually make it a longer range shooter. My first build was a 10.5" LMT barrel with PSA Lower and DD upper with mainly magpul extras and a DD BCG.

My question is in regards to the difference in parts needed to build a shooting platform meant to reach out and touch at ranges closer to ~500-600 yards. I assume the upper and lowers are standard in this respect and the barrel will obviously be longer and not chrome lined, correct? Any suggestions for barrel length? I was thinking around 18".

Also, my CQB rifle has a Daniel Defence FA BCG. Is this recommended for longer range rifles? I went with the FA BCG because I understand the greater mass of the carrier helps shorter barrels cycle better.

Anything else I can consider before starting to purchase parts? My build is a long way off, I just want to be able to buy things up when I see good prices!

I'd look at a STI from freedom ventures or the new stag 3G. Both will be able to reach the distances you want and will end up cheaper or close to building yourself.

My ideal for long range....tactical not a bench gun would be:

Noveske 18" barrel intermediate length gas
Free floated with Daniel defense MFR tube
UBR stock from magpul
Geissle trigger SSA E
Quality upper and lower assembly from any of the majors

Don't forget quality glass...on this rifle I would do a nightforce 2.5-10x32 LV reticle with the zerostop and load 77 gr bullets for it. That way you could dial it in for perfection or use the holdovers for speed. Your choice at the time.

The Daniel defense F/A BCG is a quality one but again any of the majors will do what you need.

But as stated above an off the shelf stag 20 will get you where you need to be, I run one of them with a few of the choices listed above and it does the job better than I can holding it :)
 
If you have the knowledge to build- build my friend!

As for a precision build- look into the RRA .223 Wylde Uppers from Questar.
I'm building a similar sort of rifle, and I'm either going to build an entire upper in 5.56 or get the RRA .223 Wylde upper that I mentioned. My lower that I'm building off of is an NEA. Going to get a Magpul PRS stock to replace the factory NEA stock.
 
Ive decided to jump on this thing as well.

It will take a year I think, buying with cash as I go.

RIght now Im looking at a matched upper/lower set from NEA.

That set is very reasonable for the price and buying an upper/lower paired saves a few bucks.

STI did a great job. I'm still confused on how their 1911's are so expensive and their AR's are so cheap?? The quality is still there, just way better price than most. Freedom Ventures carries the line of STI. Check there.

you have a range in your area that lets you get out to 500-600m??
 
Not at my home range but there is a DOD range close by that holds matches and allows civies to shoot. I hope that wasn't a dig trying to catch people shooting ARs off range? ;) That's what my 180B is for!

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! I didn't even know STI had a distrubutor in Canada so I will definitly check them out! Might start with the NEA upper/lower as mentioned above or go with an STI upper and lower for even cheaper!

Those package rifles above look sweet for the price, but I am looking build. My first was so much fun, I like the "creation" aspect of the project so I want to keep it up for my next rifle!

I read somewhere that 16 inch barrels were created specifically for the US market in mind as the shortest legal rifle without paying the extra fee for SBR and they didn't take into account ballistics or performance. Any truth to this? I'm thinking the longest I would go is 18.5 but 16 seems manageable too if recommended.

Do you happen to live near Cedar Springs Shooting Range? That's the one I know of in Ontario. Haven't been there for years. I'm so old.

Ya they do.

$125 for a stripped lower. Can't remember what the upper was, but they offer it stripped and as assembled.

DOD is a US term. DND is the correct Canadian term. Department of Defense versus Department of National Defence.
