Competing south of the border *need help*

Another question: When putting amounts for ammunition on the application, do you specify the amount per trip or is it a sum total of everything you might import over the course of the life of the permit (i.e. 12 months)?

Per trip.. Ie what you'll have with you.
I usually put down 1000 of everything.
I can say I've never been asked about ammo when crossing.

It's not rocket appliances.. The F6NIA app is simple and self explanatory.

its supposed to be the amount you will have in your possession when in the US.
Mine say 4000 rounds for every type of ammo I have listed.

You may only go for a one day event and only need 2-300 rounds, or do a 3 week shooting competition marathon.

Either way you are covered.

Toxic,

I take it your applied with a hunting license of some sort? Could you give me the details on that either here or via PM?

Yes I have a varmint license for South Dakota, good for a year. SD has a great setup to buy license online. You have to register on the site and you pay by cerdit card. It's a very quick process. You need a hunter safety (from anywhere) but it doesn't actually ask you for the number (unless I plugged one in when I signed up last year).

When you send in your form 6 you also send in a copy of your hunting license. My 6 is for 3 rifles and 2 pistols. Last year I also had a CZ858 and a bunch of other guns on it. They did refuse my Russian SKS last year, not importable because of restrictions. I thought that would happen but I wanted to test out the research I had done on what was admissable. No Norinco guns are importable either.

If you have any other questions just fire away...

according to the airlines your gun must be unloaded, locked and packed in a lock HARD case. you have to fill out their short form however if they ask for more tehn your PAL tell them they are breaking FOIP and they usually back off. You may take 5 kilos of ammo, must be in cases and cannot be in the same suitcase as the gun forcing you for two check bags. if you are flying the people's airline they will also charge you a special handling fee since they make you go through over size baggage with your gun.

I always take my guns and ammo to the oversize baggage, no matter the airline. They check your short form, check your boarding pass, scan your bags and away you go. One thing about my wife travelling with me is that we each fill out the short form, so we each can have 5kg of ammo. 3 bags checked .. 1 with packed firearms, 2 with 5kg of ammo each.

FYI ... Westjet doesn't charge an extra fee for "firearms handling" like AC, but you still have the $20 extra bag fee, since you have 1 for gun, 1 for ammo.

I crossed the border twice this weekend and both times, both entering/leaving the US, we popped the trunk and verified serial #'s

I even had one guy close his lane down and come over to take a look, talked guns for a couple minutes, pissed off everyone in line and was on my way.
Nice guys.

Oh, and I used the hunting license vs an invite as I had none.
Luckily the guys I dealt with knew the rules so no hassles.

Sunday morning that guy wasn't looking at the gun, he was looking at a possible target.

If you get a state hunting license be sure it is valid from the time you cross until after you plan to return.

the hunting license is only needed to get the Form6 valid for a year. if you apply with an invite, the form is only valid for that one event.

the form6 doesn't list why you are going down. just when you can (form expiry) apply for the alaska small game non resident permit, online immediately, then one gets mailed to you. attach to the form6 application.

get an invite and go down with that. bring the hunting permit just in case of an ignorant Homeland Security dude. happened to me. spent 10 minutes arguing with him, then his supervisor agreed with me after the looked into it. then they still wanted to see the hunting permit... f:P:

Oh Bob, where have you been? I do compete, but not nearly as much as I would like. Figured a road trip to a free(er) nation where I can run full capacity magazines wouldn't be such a bad idea.;)

ETA: Still waiting on a response from the club in question. I might go the hunting license route.

If you cannot get an invitation in a timely manner - and the match is at a USPSA club - please email me off forum LChico@msn.com

Include your name as it appears on your passport, your mailing address, the name of the club-range and either the match dates or the specific event you want to attend.

As a member of the USPSA Board of Directors, I'll be happy to email invitations to my Canadian friends.

That's awesome Linda
Thanks for your support.

Let us know if you want anything from up here.
A bunch of us will be coming to your matches throughout the summer.

Just to correct you on this one...without a valid hunting license your possession of any firearm or ammunition is illegal in the U.S. Even your form 6 does not legitimize possession. You need a valid hunting license or a match invitation. If you don't, any number of law enforcement agencies could legitimately ruin your trip south.

This ruling will allow States like Arizona to issue CCW permits to non-imigrant alliens if the State choooses to do so.

At least the US is trying to eliminate red tape and paper, something our Feds should take a cue from.

Take Care

Bob

they are not trying to be our friends in any way. someone took them to task and made them clarify what they already wrote.

i doubt states will start to play friends with non immigrant aliens like us.

still feels nice......
