New Black Rifle -- some questions

Hi guys, this is my first post on the forums, though I've read quite a few. I'm thinking about getting an AR-15 or possibly something a bit different.

Mainly I want it for -200 yard shooting and possible for 3 gun competition once I get a little more proficient. I'm of the mind to buy once and buy quality instead of spending money on different guns as I go to finally get something that really suits me.

As far as budget goes, I'll not be wanting to spend more than $2000 (before purchasing optics). I'm not really familiar with AR-15's so im hesitant toward building right now.

Final point, I've heard a lot of talk about the Core15's and the NEA AR-15's and was wondering which one would be best quality without worrying about price.

P.S. my ultimate goal in mind is 3 gun so I'm not necissarily hooked on the AR-15 but definately leaning towards one.
 
You can find a lot of good mid-end AR15's for $2k and under (Adcor Defense, LMT, PWS, RRA, Spike's Tactical). If you want a high-end (quality) AR, you'll have to shell out about a grand more for a Noveske or KAC.

If you're considering non-restricted, that puts you into $2,500 territory for a RobArms XCR-L or IWI Tavor.

Is the Robson XCR a fairly good rifle? I've seen mixed reviews on it but it was one of my original thoughts.

I'm really leaning towards a Core15 (piston) CORE15 M4 MOE Rifle (Piston).223 rem from Wanstalls (1,799.99) or their CORE15 M4 TAC Rifle (Piston).223 rem (Restricted) (1,999.99).

Does anyone own these guns or have experience/knowledge of them?

I'm not sure how many non-ARs people run in competition, but I'm sure any XCR-L owners would be happy to share their thoughts on the platform. I can only really advise you on the Tavor or FS2000, which are both awesome firearms (but again, will be closer to $3k).

If you're looking at a piston AR such as the Core15, I'd also check out PWS and Adcor Defense. If you're just sticking to a gas system, I'd consider an LMT Defender and NEA in the mix as well.

Piston AR really doesn't offer any advantage over a gas AR, especially, when we can only use low capacity mag and as semi auto.
for your first AR I say look for a use one in EE,you will a way better quailty AR than a brand new entry level one.

My XCR ran flawless the first thousand round, until I start reading about all the problems I am suppose to be having on the internet 3000 later I am still waiting. :(

On the contrary, pistons will run cleaner and cooler than standard DI systems. I think the jury's still out on whether there's any long-term reliability advantage, though. When I got my first AR pistons were relatively new, uncommon and particularly expensive. That you can get one sub-$2k is fairly impressive now in of itself...

Good luck finding replacement parts for Piston Ar15.
Lot easier to find replacement parts for DI Ar15.

For your first Ar15...it is better to get the Direct impingement AR15 so you will learn how Ar15 works, etc.

Also I have a Core15 M4 (DI) model and i have only shot 300 rounds through it...so far so good.

Oh please... we're talking about a BCG and piston assembly. Otherwise everything else is identical to a DI system. I could also point out that since pistons systems run cleaner and cooler, there is likely to be less wear and tear on the BCG as well. DI systems will reduce your up-front costs because they're cheaper, but they'll also have more maintenance.

There's no point in a DI vs. piston debate, because it really comes down to personal preference. The OP indicated what his budget was ($2k), and that he's primarily looking at a Core15. I merely presented him with a few additional manufacturers (both DI and piston) for consideration so he can comparison shop and make the best decision for his needs.
 
Spikes LE 14.5 inch from Questar.

- comes with excellent buffer tube, BCG, Magpul, etc. And what I didn't see until I got mine, is the Spikes comes with a really nice upgraded flash hider.
 
I went with a Stag Mod 2 from Arms East as my first AR about 6 months ago. I am far from an expert on ARs but I can tell you that it was an absolute pleasure dealing with Steve and my AR has eaten every round I have fed it. Even that dirt cheap steel cased crap(can't remember the brand)cycled flawlessly, and it was some of the dirtiest ammo I have played with. I had 1 bad mag that caused 3 FTFs in the begining, but changed it out and there hasn't been another, and I have lost track of the round count.
Others on the board can offer more insight than me, but a Stag may be worth a look.

a civil response about the XCR blaxsun? are you feeling alright? :D

spire: if you are just running for 3 gun and are not hunting, then an ar is right up your alley.

that being said, I love my XCR.
AR ergonomics & (some) parts, runs like a dream with minimal upkeep, very easy to clean. only issue I had was I put the gas tube in upside down which caused some bolt binding.
earlier XCR had some (loctite) issues. this is where the bad rap come from (IMHO)
if you thought the safety was on while pulling the trigger, you were mistaken, the trigger pull was just that bad.

the second gen are much better.

Some people will not the like the idea/look of the fixed A2 stock. The jury is still out for me but it does feel fine.

I'm trying keep my OCD / must upgrade everything personality disorder from taking over on this one.

$1500 plus taxes/shipping = worked out to just over $1700.

I put an eotech xps on it = $440

I believe CFARM has one on sale right now.

If you looking for a tacticool rifle that you can throw a crapload of extras on it, then this is not the one for you.

If you primarily want to use it for 3 gun or the like, then it may be for you.

I will do a review on it soon

And you would be correct. :D Seriously, I'd stick with a collapsible stock. The CTR is probably the best.
 
You guys have been great, lots of good suggestions and things to look into. Just a point I wanted to keep the rifle around 2000 (would be nice to be under) and expected to buy additional optics/furniture on top of that. Just wanted a nice platform to play with that wont break down or limit possibilities for a good 3 gun rifle.

No problem at all. Once you get bit by the AR bug, it's hard to go back... Get something that's within your budget; you can always upgrade later. :D
