Racoon Problem

I used to operate a small buiseness doing just this... capture and relocation of raccoons and skunks.

The easiest way for you to get rid of your tennants on your own and rapidly (and cheaply) is to go buy these items :

Liquid amonia (sold as floor cleaner)... take the nasty smelling stuff ...NOT spring freshness.
Rags that hold lots of liquid
rope
1 broom handle.

then do this :

tie a rope to a corner of a rag
imbibe it with amonia
using broom handle, push the rag as far the burrow, entrance as possible, make sure rope sticks out (like a tampon)
do this to every access point around the shed

Every 2 days (if warm dry weather...everyday), pull on the ropes, re-soak raggs a,d stuff them back under the shed.

This fould the air in the burrow (kinda smokin' them out) and animal(s) will flee/relocate themselves. One way to see if animals are still around is to lightly stuff entrances with dead leaves...if entrance is disturbed, you still havve tennants.

ok, but what to do when shedd is critter free ?

Get wire mesh (1" welded squares...NOT chicken wire). 2 feet wide by as long as you'll need to go around the sides of the shed. This is a bit labour intensive BUT YOU'LL NEVER EVER GET CRITTERS UNDER THERE AGAIN.

Dig a trench 1 fooot down from the shed wall and 1 foot out...all around. Using a forens, wood slat etc... secure the mesh... it must go down from the wall and, at bottom of trench, skirt outward. Done ? ok, fill everythingh back in with CLEAN earth and sand...no big rocks.

The reason is that a critter coming back will try (try) to dig under the mesh to get back in... it'll go down, down, hit the skirt and waste nighttime...never finding the hedge. If you put big rocks or bricks, you'll simply guide the critter right to the hedge.

not protecting the shed will mean new tennants for sure.

Capture and relocation is a rapid fix but you displace the problem. and as I said, the presence of the critters are a symptom...the shed's accessibility is the problem

If you go for livetrapping...best raccoon bait is sardines in oil. Carefull... a trap baited with this will also catch a skunk... and you need to be polite with those ;).
Hope this helps
pm me if you need more info.

Thanks or that, it's nice to hear a reply like that. I think to many people around here get off on killing, I find it a little alarming.

fly bait and coke will kill them within 10 ft of drinking that stuff. They like the sweet taste from the coke, the fly bait kills them. Put the dish right under the deck were they are, Make sure no dog or cat can get in there at it.

There must be a lot more coons and skunks this year. I shoot at least one coon a week during the day hanging around the house, see tons of dead skunks and coons on the road as well.

Yeah, gotta hate those people that want to get rid of vermin.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

You feel free to hug a rodent. Don't moan to me when they chew some wires and burn your house, or eat the water/sewage pipes under your camp.....TWK

Yes they do sell them at Cabelas, but as soon as you buy it and take it home you are breaking the law. You don't even have to use it, just being in possession of it without a trappers license is illegal.
It is not illegal to sell them, but it's illegal to pocess them without being a licenced trapper or a farmer on his own land.

Body-gripping traps

22. (1) A person shall not trap wildlife or a domestic animal by means of a body-gripping trap.

Exceptions

(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to a person who uses a body-gripping trap in accordance with the regulations, if,

(a) the person holds a license to trap furbearing mammals and uses the body-gripping trap pursuant to that license;

(b) the person is a farmer or a member of a farmer’s family and uses the body-gripping trap to trap furbearing mammals under subsection 6 (3);

(c) the person is a farmer and uses the body-gripping trap to trap wildlife, other than a bird, under section 31;

(d) the person uses the body-gripping trap in a part of Ontario prescribed by the regulations; or

(e) the body-gripping trap is prescribed by the regulations as a humane trap. 1997, c. 41, s. 22.

I had a squirell problem at our summer home. The structure is skirted and insulated but the buggers managed to nest in there. I used the ammonia idea and it worked like a charm. I also give my garbage box at home an occasional spritz and have yet to have problems with mice rats or squirrels.

if they are in there block any means of escape and let the f12kers die make sure to throw something in there they cant stand first.

...or am I going to have to go the live trap route and relocate them?

My dear city boy, don't you dare relocate them for someone else to deal with. Raccoons are vermin.

The simple, common sense steps:

1. Live trap them.
2. Shoot them as they are caught. A .22 short fired out of a rifle is very quiet, and will not alert any idiot neighbors you may have.
3. Bury them in your back yard, or take to a farm buddy's place to bury.

Note: If the thought of shooting them in your shed causes you to lose bowel control, pipe in some automotive exhaust to the covered trap.

The 3 "S" policy should come into effect here...

Shoot, shovel, and shut the #### up.

BB gun with hide piercing pellets does quite nicely on urban racoons. I may or may not be speaking from experience...

my grand father used to live catch and dispatch with the car exhaust back in the 90's but found that the cars were not killing them anymore. he would run the car for 15 mins and the things would still be alive. I told him to try the gas lawnmower and bingo, the coons were dropping after 5mins again. I guess it was all the pollution crap they added to the cars.
As for using poisons, such as, coolant, just remember that if you can't get to it to recover it your gonna have one hell of a stink while it rots under your shed.

Seeing as your shed is already ruined, when you know that most or all are under there, quickly berm up the edges, dump 5 gallons of gas in the shed and toss in a match from a safe distance. Once it gets down to coals you can invite the neighbors over for a marshmallow roast.

I don't know the by-laws for brampton, but im pretty sure its illegal to shoot a raccoon or any animal in city limits.

Also, I doubt your bb gun would do much damage too them.

I use a live trap to catch them and it works great. that's probably best bet. unless you can find an animal control company that will do it for you

My father in law was using a trap to catch rabbitts and caught a coon. Damn thing bite him and he had to visit the urgent care center in hamilton and had to have numerous shots. My guess it is a family and the laws are pretty strict on what you can do with the coon. If you can get rid of them best bet is to contact one of the animal control companies. That is really the best legal thing to do. If you trap one there is 7 more and you really not suppose to harm the damn pest. So if you drop it off a few km away it will just come back to its family.

You can cool/coke and poison but if your neighbours are animal lovers then you can be in a world of trouble. Especially if they have a cat and the cat ends up dieing. Guys will suggest illegal stuff which works on the farm but in the city you have to watch the type of neighbors you have. I have a nut job for one neighbor and if I put out coke/poison I would be in a world of hurt because she is a calling someone on me.
