Need, help, going to Zone 1 this year to hunt with my brother in laws family, they own alot of land, alot of land! But, I have sign on with my sister, who has just got all her lic's and courses done at the age of 59, and very small and frail, So I have to ship something just for her to use. I have a small 308 I can ship to her, but I really would like to use my fully rifled 12 gauge with a sabot slug when I get there, but can not find anything online about it online. Or should I take my old bolt 30/30 for her and take my 308, but I really want to use my 870 tree chopper, these are not going to be far shots, 200 yards and under, most likely 100 or less.
 
Personally, I would go 30/30 for her and 308 for you. Keep it close like you say and it should be great. I would not use the slug gun for moose just because I am unsure if the penetration would be adequate at the ranges and angles moose present. fMoose are put together much different than a deer.
 
the new slugs are pretty good. i wouldnt take a crack at a moose with one past 100yrds. in B.C. you cant use shotgun for moose. check regs for the area. 30-30 should be good for moose to 150yrds. 200yrds for deer no problem. its always ware you hit em not what you hit em with
 
I know it's where you place it counts the most, but I did use those rem soft point sabot slugs on deer! At about 150 yards, knocked a big fat doe broadside 5 feet away from her tracks, so the impact must have some effect of that heavey grain, it was like she got hit with Thor's Hammer,lol

We recoverewd a cow moose 2 years ago that the neighbouring camp shot with a 30 30 in deer season. The guy shot it in the front shoulder. The bullet broke the leg and that was all. Not saying it isnt adequate as lots of moose have fallen to them but if I had my choice, it wouldnt be my first. He shot it at 78 yards according to the CO.
 
Can you borrow a gun from your relatives while there? The 308 would be good for your sister, but a slug or 30-30 are poor choices for novice moose hunters,IMO. Use a 270,308,30-06,338,7-08,etc. I'd suggest 7mm and 150 grain as minimum weight/diameter. Basically, you can never go wrong with choosing the biggest caliber you can shoot well.
Starting with "minimum", no matter the species, is generally a bad idea.

my cousin, same shot with a 300wm and silvertips, same result, better bullet placement, or tougher bullet construction
