Hi,
Received today: Mossberg 42B.
Planning to dismantle as far as possible and clean the parts (except the barrel and stock, obviously) ultrasonically.

Anyone know how to take the bolt apart? NON destructively?
Cheers,
W

If you hold the front half in your right hand and the rear half in your left hand they twist apart with your left hand going away from you towards the top. When you get near the end of the threads (1/4'-3/8")apply slight pressure towards the center of the two pieces as it is under spring pressure and will pop open .If they won't come apart with hand pressure put one half in a vise(gently) and use a pair of pliers(gently) on the other half.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to have to use the vice and some brass "jaws" on the pliers to keep from marring the material. Hope you're right.... (So the bolt-face end and the rear-end are screwed together on a right-hand thread?)

yes right hand threads. Spray some penetrating oil down the rear side of the bolt handle and let sit for a while to help. The front piece screws into the rear piece. Also, while holding the front part of the bolt in the vise turn the bolt handle as if you were closing it in the gun. This will take the pressure off the firing pin spring. The bolt handle will move freely when this is done.

thanks for the advice. I got it apart as described. Had to do some gentle persuasion with the punch to get the firing pin to slide out, and the extractors were challenging but it's apart, the ultrasound is churning away all the gunk now, and when it's out, dried, lubed, and all, I'll polish the cocking surface a little, polish the sides of the firing pin a little to make it move a little more freely, and get it back together. Whee!

There seems to be a little leaf spring of some kind missing - which would keep pressure on the bases of the four different sight posts - It seems that it should fit under the sight (between the sight and the barrel) and put a little upward pressure on a bit of spring-steel that's in there. I've wedged a bit of brass (from a .308 case) in there to do something, but it's not right. How to find (or make) a spring? (Have a bit of spring steel that I'm going to work away on, heat, bend, harden, temper, blue, and maybe even have it work...)

Here's some pictures of the sight on mine. I might be able to get you the spring. Depends on what sight you have. Some of my Mossberg's didn't have the proper sight on them when I got them.

Here's a couple of snaps of what I have... Previous owner must have lost them (prior to the person from whom I bought the rifle - she says the sights have always been loose for her, so the spring can't have been there)

Here's a picture of the "spring" that's under the screw.Yours looks like it broke at the bend. Back the screw out of your sight and the missing piece is probably there. I didn't have any luck finding one for you. If the other piece is under the screw you could try putting it in a vise and silver soldering the pieces together. There will be minimal stress on the part. I'm not sure if it would hold but worth a try. And it'd hidden under the sight. Keep an eye on Ebay to. Parts come up for sale once and a while.

Yep. The bit under the screw was, indeed, broken off, and was under the screw. Seems kinda frail. Not sure if it's still there.
Will keep the eyes out for one but in the interim I may try to make something. Bit of a challenge but do-able...

Thanks Lyman54. I'm going to try to make a spring but if you beat me to it that would be great. I'm taking a carbon steel jigsaw blade, and will grind, drill, heat, bend, and see if it works, but it would be really a whole bunch easier if the part was available.
Cheers

I checked with the guy I thought might have your part and he has nothing kicking around. I'll keep an eye open for you and if I see one I'll grab it. There is a show this weekend near me and there is an older gentleman there who has a couple of boxes of misc bits and pieces. I put together a complete S107 sight out of his boxes at one show. He charged me $5 for the parts.

I'm working all weekend (and all week last week and the next two weeks) without break - such is coaching. If the bits and pieces are available at the show I'd very much appreciate you picking one up for me.

Cheers,
W
