which version of 870 should I buy?

Any I.sight apreciated, I want to get an 870, but not sure which versio. Is best in everyones opinion. I want wood stock, and no bigget than 3 inch action. I hunt deer shoot clays ducks ggeese etc thanks for all replys
 
Sounds like you want the 870 Express "Combo". It should come with two barrels, a 20" fully rifled, rifle sighted, slug barrel (for the deer), and a 26" vented-rib barrel which is great for duckies. It comes with one "modified" choke tube, so you might also want to pick up the little Remington express choke tube kit which will get you the Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder choke tubes.

I think Wholesale Sports (just sayin') has the combo for about $520.
 
None. New 870's are garbage. Buy an old wingmaster or find another brand.

On a side note, you're the first person I've heard of hunting geese that only wants a 3" action. There are high fliers I've nailed with 3 1/2" that just wouldn't come to our spread and calls. I know I couldn't have made contact with 3".

Brownings BPS is the top of the line pump gun at the moment IMO.
 
X 2 - Wingmaster . On my second wingmaster over 30 yrs of dedicated bird hunting, dont cheap out on the express, their is a reason they cost more ;) Only other pump I like to shoot is the Benelli, much fatter in the hands but a nice pump.

Are the BBs from the 3" somehow not going as far as the 3.5", or are they just not as accurate?
 
Listen to the first response. A combo will suit you well as you can get a vent rib barrel with interchangeable chokes (Which changes the restriction on your shotgun pattern), as well as a deer barrel. As far as deer barrels go you can get a 20" rifled barrel with open sights or a cantilever, which allows you to mount a scope.

My personal opinion is that the 870 Express is a gun that is no longer on par with shotguns of that price, they are problematic and Remington warranty is one of the worst. I would go with the Mossberg 500 instead, it has a lighter weight aluminum receiver, and we have seen far less of them come back into the store for warranty. You can even get a 28" vent rib barrel (perfect for duck and geese) as well as a 24" turkey barrel & 24" cantilever deer barrel. The cost on this is only $599.99 for camo (even though you were looking for wood). I have a an old smooth Wingmaster. It goes shuck-shuck and loads a round every time I work the pump. It goes bang every time I pull the trigger.

I also have a newer Express. It goes shuck-shuck and loads a round every time I work the pump. It goes bang every time I pull the trigger.

Cosmetic issues, bigotry, envy, and bragging rights aside, the proof is in the pudding.
 
I have the mossberg, its shoots good but I find the pump isnt smooth no matter how clean it is. Also its a 3 1/2 want to shorten the action up thats why I want the 3 inch
 
If you have about $1000-$1150ish to spend you can get a new 28" barrel vent rib (26" & 30" also available) 870 Wingmaster for clays, birds and smaller furred game and an extra deer barrel (a 20" Rem. Choke w/sights or 20" fully rifled barrel w/sights or a 20" fully rifled w/Cantilever). They don't sell a Wingmaster combo so you have to buy the deer barrel of your choice as an accessory.

I own more 870s than I care to admit. The new Wingmaster models, although not quite as nice as the old ones, are still impressive (I bought another new one in march). The 870 Express fit and finish isn't anything to write home about but they are great guns none the less. The 870 Express combos are a good bang for your buck.
 
I have read a bunch of bad things on the new express models but mine (that's a month or so old) works just fine.

No sharp edges, rust, dings or anything else. If I had a complaint it would be that the finish scratches easy but that hardly a reason to get upset. For 310 dollars I'm not disappointed and would buy another in a heartbeat.
 
I recently bought an 870 Express 7 shot (one peice mag, no extension) As mentioned, the finish is easy to scratch, but not a big deal for me, I didnt buy it for looks. If I could go back and do it again, I would probably get another Express but the combo version (or at least a 5 shot model so I could swap barrels as desired)
 
if you're going to buy an 870 Express just get a Dominion Arms Grizzly (an 870 clone) instead.
I have owned both, and I find the Grizzly to be equal to, and in some ways better than the Express
 
I have an express and I had problems with it. Remington warranty is crappy... I also have an 870 wingmaster and it's a lot better. It's more expensive, but better overall quality and no MIM critical parts.

My choice is an 870 wingmaster.
