I'm fairly new to any precision shooting, of course it's good to throw around the bullets! but now need to practice hitting the bull's eye d:h:

So I need some suggestions/advice on sniper rifle(s). I can buy more than one , but need to be something that's very accurate and decent caliber. I friend of mine works at Savage so can get those cheap(er). Any models or other brands most welcomed.

Thanks

Get a .22lr bolt action and practice with that. Then, when you are able to ask a question without talking about "sniper rifles", you'll be ready to receive a serious response.

You'll have to excuse the uptight amongst us.
For a great starter sniper rifle, I would suggest a Mossberg Maverick with a high power scope.

Feels like others really had the urge to respond. What I meant was a precision rifle, but since I'm new to the north american firearm nomenclature , couldn't find a proper name.

But thanks a bunch 9x19p. I'll look into the Mossbergs Mavericks, but can't say I'm interested in Shotguns though. Any idea on Mosin Nagant or SV40? are they any good as well?

Thanks

For a starter in precision grade- start out with a Remington 700 or a Savage Axis in your choice of calibre- .223 Rem & .308 Win being the most popular of the two. Both rifles have their pros and cons, but both are good starting points.

However, if you are completely new to firearms, get a good Savage 22LR and upgrade the optics on it.

EDIT: Where exactly are you loacted ChickenTikka? If you're close to where I am, I may be willing to part with my Axis. :p

Answering a few questions can make the recommendations a little more helpful for you.

What kind of budget did you have in mind (rifle and optics)?
What distance will you be shooting?
How accurate do you want? Is 1 MOA acceptable (approx. 1" at 100yards)?
Do you plan to only use it for paper, or will you want to hunt with it as well? If you want to hunt with it, what will you be hunting, gophers, coyote, deer or moose?
Are you planning to hand load or just buy factory ammunition?

Also, don't worry about looking into the mossberg maverick rifles, it was a joke. The mosin and SV40 may have been used for sniper rifles back in the day, but they are easily outclassed by the modern bolt actions like the remmington and savage when it comes to accuracy.

Ya, old men get squirly when you say sniper. Sniper implies that you might shoot something other then paper.

But "Sniper, Snipe on" We all know what your talking about, some people just need to feel important on the internet by picking apart wording.

Check out many of the retailers above. I think personally the line for me is how robust the system is. As well as if it has been designed to shoot in the field, on angles, ect. If it looks like an ugly F-Class, benchrest "Lamborgini" of a rifle, then avoid it. Stick to basic rifles with a MOA guarantee. (Rem, Tikka, Perhaps Savage (no experience with them)

Guys are right in that the rifle does not make the shooter a sniper, but a MOA rifle, a good bipod, a homemade sock filled with beans (rear sandbag) Good Glass with a reticule you can measure with (mil dot, Mrad, Mil lines) and your good to start. Then get a computer program called "Shooter Ready" its super basic but teaches you how to make calculations and use mildot. (i found it free online) Then practice .

p.s. Forget all the haters, I think its a sniper rifle ;)

Or the "W" word.......never never ever say weapon!

:D

Kirk, this reminds me of my first rifle I ever bought. (prepare for story mode) So I was 18 and had just finished my Infantry course. I had a new Restricted PAL and headed off to P&D on a weekend off. I was very excited as I held the Bushmaster XM-15 20'' in my hand, my dream of a C7 clone was coming true.

Customer service was top notch, and I was excited, and I am sure it was evident.

Once I headed to the cash desk they handed me off to another guy, he said, "ah, Bushmaster AR, nice choice!" "Yes" I replied, "Its my first weapon" This guys demeanor instantly changed. He scowled at me and then proceeded yo lecture me on how it was a "Firearm" not a "weapon" I said I understood his point about public perception, but, "look man, make no mistake; this was made to do one thing, and thats shoot people. " then "I am getting this for one reason, and thats train for work, where I am training to shoot people"

He was not a fan of me, but took my money anyways :D

Great story Skrypnyk! Its amazing how even the people I work for who train me to shoot people, still hate the idea that I may do it some day LOL. If only they could make a rifle that fires gumdrops and teddy bears.

As for a choice rifle, stay within your budget, when you start outshooting the rifle, then consider the upgrade. Most will agree that you should spend your money on the optic. Glass is for life, rifles come and go. Most modern bolt guns are far more accurate than the shooter behind them, myself included.

come on guys, be nice. He's new to the sport after all... d:h:

as for snipers, Simo Hyaha was a pretty accurate sniper and did all his work with a Mosin Nagant and Iron sights.. the shooter makes the rifle, not the other way around.

If you don't handload, get a .308W. If you do handload, you can also consider getting a .223 Rem with a fast twist (1-8" or 1-7"). Savage makes several good rifles.

Find a place to shoot (Sharon gun club, Oshawa gun club etc, or the Ontario Rifle Association), and find a mentor to teach you, spend lots of time shooting (and listening), enjoy yourself as you learn how to shoot well.

Perhaps the best thing you could do is to contact the Ontario Rifle Association and find out about signing up for one of the "Intro Day" packages. You'll learn a heck of a lot, and among other things it'll help you figure out what rifle(s) you might like to get.

a little off topic but

National GEO channel had a program called Snipers INC. recently. They showed the Barrett family operation and the .50 M 107 and lots of new stuff very cool.

Anyway enjoy your research and final acquisition.

Go get yourself a savage model 10 (precision carbine or flcp-k)with accutrigger, accustock(or hs precision/mcmillan if you have the $$) start reloading and shoot away. when you get tired of the 308 get a savage prefit in 6.5x47lapua, 6x47lapua, or one of the many other 6mm cartridges. i would suggest the 6mm br for extreme accuracy and ease of reloading.
