What are your favorite 308 recipies for accuracy (to say 3-400 yards) through an m305?

Bullet weight, type and brand:
Grains:
Primer:

I am just looking at a good spot to start developing a load for my norc and have never done rifle ammo before.

Reloading manuals have an M1A/M14 section just for them too.
It's significantly less than other 308 loads, due to the action
being weaker than a bolt.
 
My Remington 750 (semi .308) likes 165gr Sierra GameKings with 43gr of IMR4064.

It also likes W748 (43gr.) It didn't like IMR4895.

Winchester Brass, CCI #200 primer and 2.75" COL.
 
I am not shooting that far and using a Savage package for hunting but have had good luck with:
Powder type: Varget
Bullet weight, type and brand: Hornady 165 Grain Jacketed
Grains: 42.0 – 2545 FPS to 46.0 – 2773 FPS
Primer: CCI #200
Length: 2.750"
Brass: Winchester
 
It is generally recommended to load between 147-173gr bullets for the M1/M14 using standard jacketed bullet loads.

A powder in the suitable burn rate range for the action of this type of semi auto gas rifle such as IMR 4895, H4895, AA 2495, BL C2, H335, Win 748, IMR 4064 (and there are others).


A good example would be the Sierra Matchking HPBT .308" 168gr with IMR 4895 or IMR 4064 powder. Use the .308 Win data in your manual with these powders.
 
I've had great success with the Hornady 168gr HPBT Match and 4895. Just for fun I picked up some Varget but I haven't had time to work up a load for it yet. Pretty sure I'm running 42.5gr of the 4895.
 
newshot you should edit your title in advanced edit, to 308 loads in a M305. You will extend the life of the rifle if you run reduced loads in it. Running hot target loads will hammer the action.

Thanks everyone for the info. I am researching them and looking forward to the new challenges of reloading for a rifle. 45acp is so easy to load, this seems a bit more complicated.

It might be a bit on the slow side but it isn't terribly out to lunch (not like, say, using 4350 or 4831 in an M14 or M1).

Varget and H4895 are next door neighbours (both are produced in the same factory in Australia, where they are known as ADI 2208 and ADI 2206H).

You'll find published load data with some remarkably hot loading data for Varget in .308 (including on the Hodgdon online data). I shoot a bolt action target rifle and am quite accustomed to seeing (and loading) pretty hot ammo, but I have to say I find some of the published Varget data to be remarkable - I don't load my ammo that hot, and I am definitely in favour of loading up to full performance.

If you are going to use Varget in an M14, one easy thing you could do as a bit of a sanity check is to never exceed published H4895 max loads; this ought to give you a certain amount of sensible margin.

Don't take this the wrong way and think you need to only fire starting loads from an M14/M1A/M305, that's not the case at all. Just stay a grain or two below all-out-max-loads.
 
Around 46 grains of BL-C(2) or W748 with a 150 grain FMJ will allow you to approximate M80 ball.

I use W748 and a Hornady 150 grain BTSP bullet. I make sure the velocity does not exceed 2,750 fps. I found that a slightly reduced load of the 748 (45.3 to 45.5 gr) with a CCI magnum primer is magical when it comes to performance and accuracy.
 
Question, I too am starting to load for rifle (M305 and M1 Garand). Is it recommended to fully resize the brass or just the case neck? I see dies available for both...

I seem to remember someone saying neck resize only if you are shooting out of the same rifle.
