which is your favourite gun? sks, cz 858, or ak-47. I have an sks however i prefer my dads cz 858. the cz 858 is funner to shoot in my opinion but it is priced out of my range for now. i have never shot a ak-47 but if i go down south i might shoot one. :HFU:

what is your favourite of the bunch guys?

I havent shot the AK, but I still think it would be my favourite of the three. Although all are fantastic rifles and cheap to shoot :).

I'm probably going to get locked and banned for saying this, but I don't like the SKS. Yup.

As far as the Vz58 and AK go, I'd take a quality newer model AK over the '58, the AK is more reliable and durable, has benefitted from a lot more development, and is literally 100 times more common.

An Arizona friend of mine's mean looking plum furnitured 5.45 Arsenal AK puts my VZ58 to shame in every aspect but weight.

I would take a VZ58 over a lesser quality or older model AK however.

I have sent thousands of rounds downrange with an RPK and not quite as many with a CZ. No question the CZ is more accurate, more ergonomic and considerably lighter. I also believe from my experience that the CZ/VZ is every bit as reliable.

Hands down the CZ is my choice. If they once again allowed us to own the AK platform, I would certainly buy one, but my CZ would still be my favorite.

VZ-58 / CZ858...every single time. IMO they are a whole...'nother...level...

Yes, AK's have the reliability rep, as do SKS's. But both are heavier than a VZ. Both have poorer ergonomics and handling than the VZ.

VZ 58 is like an improved AK. That said, I would love to get a nice laminated stock SKS! See, I already have the VZ!

In NAM the VC special forces weapon of choice was the VZ over the AK. Those buggers were hard core fighters and if they used the VZ over the Ak you can bet your ass it was just a better weapon.

The Ak just has the popularity factor behind it. So most think it is the ####.
Plus the Russians let the VZ get built and used when every other country under Russia had to build an AK. That right there say's alot about the VZ platform.

All three are tough as nails and worthy or praise.

VZ is better than the AK in every way... Lighter, probably as reliable, easier to field strip, better ergonomics, has a hold-open feature and probably won't burn you as much when hot (I can't say for sure because I've never tried it in the USA with real mags...)

The only thing going for the AK is the stronger and more abundant mags... And the cool factor.... When shooting FA, the AK gets real hot and you better have gloves on! In the USA, they are cheap and plentiful... Here they are nice safequeens that can't even be shot at a range...

The SKS is not in the same category as it is not an assault rifle... But it is built like a tank (actually antitank!), is cheap and reliable. With the original 10 round mag, it is better than most rifles of the era and is quick to reload with the clips... The D model is great with the AK mags but there is no point in Canada with 5 rounders....

I've never handled the AK, but I believe it doesn't have a bolt hold open feature after the last round is fired... very, very bad. The VZ does, this way you know right off the bat that you're out of ammo without getting the dead man's click. And of course the VZ is way more tacticool than the SKS.

Yugo AK magazines cause the bolt to hold open after last round.

The Vz 58 is a better rifle than the AK and far superior to the SKS. The only thing the SKS has going for it over the other two is that they're dirt cheap.

They also went back to AKs at some point, and regular Communist troops that recieved VZs reportedly couldn't wait to exchange them for AKs. Was it because of logistical concerns or because the AK turned out to be mechanically superior, who knows?

One thing I do know is that most of the AKs used in Vietnam were of the heavy older style milled type and it was only late in the war did they start recieving AKMs.

Anyways I don't really find the VZ58 ergonomically superior, the mag release is not as good as the AKs, the safety/selector is just as poor by Western standards IMO, though admittedly much quieter to operate, and the BHO doesn't save you much time and effort and makes for magazines that are bulkier and probably less strong than they'd otherwise be.

I also find AK factory stocks more comfortable front and rear with the possible except of the underfolder.

My 2 cents (applicable only to Canada and our idiotic gun laws)

CZ/VZ
SKS
AK

CZ/VZ has detachable mags, bolt hold open, and can be loaded by stripper clip (I can reload a CZ with a stripper clip faster than I can change the magazine - thanks to our stupid 5 round rule :puke: )

SKS is easily maintained, all but unbreakable, has a bolt hold open, and is stripper ciip fed (great feature thanks to our stupid 5 round rule)

AK is a safe queen thanks to our stupid gun laws (thanks Kim Campbell :puke:)

AKs could be used until 2009- not Campbell. It was a Librocrat plot and gov't bought it. They tried to correct it but NDP cried "machine guns in our streets."

What I meant by the Kim Campbell comment was her government putting AK's on the Prohibited list because they looked scary.

You could still get permits to take your AK to the range up until 09, and IIRC it was the CFO's who decided that they would no longer issue said permits, thus making ALL prohib rifles safe queens.

I have only owned and shot Norinco AK's, I found them very unergonomic for me. Maybe that's why every third world "Warrior" on TV fires 30 rd. bursts from the hip?

I like the VZ, much lighter than I expected.
