What do you think of the Remington 700 sniper rifle?

Real snipers don't have to buy their gear, the government (federal, provincial or municipal) does.

Not only that, anything that is truly "milspec" will instantly become thousands of dollars more expensive than something similar that is available to civilians.

If you want something that looks like a sniper rifle (aka tacticool) then fill your boots. However unless you feel like going to jail for shooing people your rifle will either be a hunting rifle (shooing at animals) or a precision rifle (shooting at paper).

Yes the skill of shooting small groups on paper could make you a good sniper. Here in the precision forum there are a lot of people who will you flak about the "s" word and I don't blame them, it implies the wrong thing and doesn't help the image of this hobby (I don't call it a sport because I firmly beleive that a sport must make your heart rate go up ... but that's another debate).

Enjoy the forum, there are many many knowledgable people here with loads of good advise.

Agreed. It is not in the best interest of target shooters to refer to their rifles as "sniper" rifles. DCRA and provincial associations as well as those who promote shooting are in agreement with this.

We deal with snipers and target shooters and wannabees are not appreciated by anybody except themselves.

Nothing wrong with the 700 for a PRECISION RIFLE. Its been in service with the USMC since 1966, kinda says something. The M40 though is modified by USMC armorers at Marine Corps Base Quantico. So its not a off the rack M700 but if you get one with a varmint barrel and add a little bedding you'll be good to go.

and how are those attitudes helping with the growth of the sport?
there are a lot of guys out there buying "zombie" this and "tactical" that, who would probably love "precision" "target" shooting that get turned off by the attitudes expressed above...heck even showing up at an APRA event with a stock Model 700VS is frowned upon...thanks but no thanks...

Last week we sponsored 2 new shooters with ammo and loaned my Rem 700 and tomorrow for the Inter-Maritime Trials we invited another newcomer with a Savage. We do all we can in all provinces, how about you?

OP - with good reason we eschew the terms 'sniper' and 'sniper rifle' because of the association with shhting at persons. If you are not a troll please take this to heart but feel quite free to buy a Rem 700 precision rifle and shoot tight groups at paper targets. If you are a troll please do so elsewhere.

Your treasured, s****r rifle, remington 700 is a great target and sporting rifle.

easy to work on, accurate.

if you think it's pricey, a tokyo marui might be a little more in your price range.
 
Great Sniper Rifle . In its uses by the US military it has shot many human beings, many of them even died. In its uses with the Indonesian military as their Sniper Rifle it has likely shot and even killed many people as well.

So as for your question, its a great Sniper Rifle and is not exorbitantly expensive. It has a long track record of being able to shoot people from a variety of ranges under a variety of conditions. You cant ask for much more.

It would probably serve you well whatever your application may be, be it Sniping in India(shooting the snipe bird, the origin of the word) or sharpshooting, or putting holes in perfectly good paper (that could have been used for learning or writing.) Or even shooting steel, (that could have been used for building something constructive.)

me too, and it is, i was just commenting on personal experience at a few events i went to
i'm just lucky i have lots of places to shoot, i'd hate to have to rely on the actual shooting community inspire new members because they use the wrong term to describe their rifle
