Savage barrel taper

Can anyone with a fairly new heavy-barrel Savage tell me if the barrel tapers at all? I'm looking to shoot some hunter silhouette.

Cheers,
Grant

Nope - the heavy barrels don't taper at all.

Since I, too, wanted to be able to shoot hunter class, yet I wanted a Savage TR, I built my own, using a no-sights tapered barrel model F. At least in my area, non-tapered barrels are verboten in hunter class silhouette competition.

Interestingly, the tapered-barrel models are non-tapered except for the last 5" at the muzzle, and there's not a lot of taper, at that.

I'm on the Island too, gonna be shooting at VFGPA starting this fall. I used to have a CIL 310 (Annia 64) that I shot silhouette with but sold it a while back.

I'm tossed between going super cheap, getting a CZ452 or finding another CIL.

There is a very slight taper. The rules do not specify how much taper, so you should be fine.

Really? The BV or FV barrel has a taper?

I'm strongly considering a Marlin XT22RZ as well. They are a heavy sporter barrel and seem to be getting good reviews, nice and cheap too.

I've got a weaver V16 with dot and some Signature Zee rings just waiting for the right gun.

I shoot a savage btvs that's been installed into a Boyd's stock. And yes the rules do not stipulate the amount of taper required or where it's to start on the barrel. And yes mine has a 1mm taper, or rather size difference from the chamber end to the muzzle end. Not much but it's a tapper. Most of the clubs on the island won't give you much trouble with it. The only issues you might have would be at a provincial or national match, and even there you'd probable be fine to shoot a non taper barel as long as your not running for the championship LOL. Trigger and overall weight seem to be more of a concern.

I measured mine with a caliper at the chamber end and again at the muzzle end and found there to be just less than 1mm. Not much but it's a tapper.

Well that brings back the FV as a viable option then, I thought they were straight.

Bigdonky: which Boyds did you go with?

Squib : not quite.

i ended up with a target rimfire and love it.
the only thing was I had to adjust my fore hand hold to accomodate the wider forend. other than that the fit and finish was great and the weight was nearly perfect to keep me legal for both clases. one thing to consider as I did is if your unsure of the Tapper you can have it machined for arround $60 at your local machine shop to put a very small taper on it. i might still do that just to make sure its a visible taper.

Good to know!

I'm still debating the Marlin/Savage. Pluses on the Savage is nice heavy barrel while still being legal, the Marlin seems to have a rep for shooting very nicely though.
Tough call.
I've got access to a machine-shop with a 14x36" Lathe so I can thread the FV barrel if that strikes my fancy. Or indeed I can recown, shorten or possibly set-back if I get ambitious.

Was it this stock:

Yah that's the one. I had no issues with it. The barreled action dropped right in. I've also ondered a rifle basix trigger for it. I want to see if it's any different or more likely any better than the stock trigger.

Hmm, that puts the cost up to nearly CZ level. But with a more suitable stock.

Choices, choices. I could get a 452 American for ~$500.

Same thing as last time I bought a good .22lr bolt gun, got a 64 Annie and sold it to get a 54 but never found the right one. Now I'm thinking cheap again.
