You know... about 1/3 of the refurbs coming into Canada already have bolts in the white. Might have been easier to just buy one of those in the first place?

Looks awesome! Any issues with pitting like I had?

Well it's a $6-$10 job vs a $300 new rifle. It only takes about 30 minutes. Didn't know the refurbs came in white, always though it was blued only.

I didn't post it, but the site I got the info from says this is how the vinegar eats away bluing was discovered:

I saw a number of postings to various on-line gun forums where people reported doing this. The one that I most remember was from a guy who discovered that vinegar removed bluing when the Taco Bell hot sauce dripped onto his gun because, no joke, he was going to the range and carrying his gun and some tacos in the same paper bag. When he got to the range and discovered the mess, he wiped off the hot sauce and saw that the bluing came with it.

His unorthodox and rather inappropriate carrying method certainly got my attention. I will keep my tacos and my pistol in separate bags, but at least we can learn from his observational chemistry. Taco Bell sauce lists vinegar as a primary ingredient.

Not i let the pieces soak in vinaigre for 2 hours and there was very little pitting but what really gave it is lustre is to run it over the cloth wheel buffer with car wax... JP.

Ah, mine only sat for around 30 min. I may try letting it sit long when I have some free time to get it all fully out but it doesn't bother me that much.

When I want to remove blueing rapidly, I dunk the part in muriatic acid for 5 seconds, then dunk it into a pail of water to dilute/remove the acid.

The effect is instantaneous and doesn't hurt the metal if done quickly.

Do outside and wear a breathing mask and safety goggles and rubber gloves.

Crappy tire sells the acid.

What if you dunk the whole rifle in a few gallons of vinegar? Or spit mouthfuls of vinegar at it?

A White Russian SVT40? It might look cool with that 20's Art Deco Look or the 50's chrome nickel look!

I just finished experimenting on 1 of my SVT:) After the vinegar process, i only buffed by hand with some rubbing compound, not as shiny as the others fellow nutz but i still like it better than the plum color. I guess i will do my 2 others as well:)

I have one of each - plum and white. The white is marked SA for Finnish Army, and was picked up from a dead Russian. The plum is from the current batches coming from Ukraine(?). The shop that did the refinishing should never have tried to refinish the breech block carriers. So removing the plum colour is actually restoring a restoration.
