What would a 1947 Colt 1911 in 38 Super go for approx? Its condition seemed fair to good, but it does not have an original magazine. Bluing was good for the age...

If you mean the one that was at the Smith Falls gun and sportsman show today my guess is that it would sell for around $1100.

The grips and mag were incorrect, however the rest of gun was in relatively good condition. This gun would have left the factory with the ugly USGI brown plastic grips and I'm not surprised they were replaced at some point with checkered wooden grips. Correcting the grips is not a big deal however the mag is probably more difficult to find.

I would think a mint example could bring more to the right Colt collector. Decent original Colt 38 super 1911's from this period are pretty rare in Canada. The one at the show had many USGI parts used by Colt during that period that were leftover from WWII. It was a very cool gun and a fair price in my opinion, congrats to the next owner.

Yeah... that was the one... he has been asking $1400 I think for a while now... been at several shows with it.

I didn't find the show to be much overall...

Yes, the show was not very exciting! Well, at least the Merrickville show is tomorrow and that should hopefully be good.

If you can make it to the Montreal Arms and Militaria Fair it is very good and four times a year! For me it's worth the drive from Ottawa.

As described above, I think the gun is worth about one thousand dollars. 38super is a nice caliber but has some serious limitations for casual shooters. I'm not saying its bad but it is a unique caliber, the only commonality is the 9mm bullet.
I think a thousand dollars is right, sight unseen....
