My SKS with the ATI stock and Tapco mags will not operate as a semi-auto. I operate it like a bolt action. It will try to eject an empty, but can only manage to pull the round about an 1" out. I pull back on the bolt, finish the ejecting and it grabs another an away I go.

Any thoughts?

If you have the original parts, restore the gun to factory configuration and try it. If it works OK, try changing one thing at a time to isolate the cause of your problem. I have had aftermarket stocks on my Chinese SKS and they work fine, so I suspect the new mag may be the source of the problems.

Mine worked the same way,, put the metal mag back on.

FOR SALE 1 x Tapco Mag only used once.

thats because u need to mod the tapco mags. ive already wasted one. call tapco and they will tell u where to sand. seems to me that the top of your mag is too narrow and is preventing the push back. Alternatively, try reverting to original and see if the gas piston is working as it should be.

Im new to the SKS and had exactly the same problem with a Tapco stock and Tapco mags (chinese SKS). I had bought 2 mags, one had a black insert (the part that the bullets push down on) the other had a beige one. The black one worked fine and beige one didnt. I bought 2 more from Accuracy plus, both beige and both didnt work. Comparing the 2 I found the problem was one tiny part at the top of the mag lock hook was too thick and was preventing the bolt lock from dropping down after the round was fired. it would lock the bolt back each time. I sanded the 3 mags with beige followers (or whatever they are called) to match the black one and they all work fine now.

Hard to describe, easy to do... sorry I can't be of more help. Theres nothing wrong with your gun or the mags... they just need a little sanding.
