Do stainless steel barrels, like on the stainless stalker, have the same ''barrel life'' as regular barrels of the same makers?

i think that stainless has a shorter life in number of rounds, but longer for a hunting gun due to less corrosion, that said, how many rounds do you put through it in a life time? 1000? 5000? even then, most guys wont ever see the accuracy loss at that number

Wrong! Barrels do not wear out due to friction, as much as the throat erodes due to pressure and temperature. If anything. stainless is slightly more resistant to throat erosion.

A number that used to get thrown around was 20 percent longer life for the stainless.

A big factor in how long a barrel lasts is how good it was in the first place. That's a bit of a crap shoot with factory barrels.

Target rifle shoots fire about 1,000 rounds a season. We used to get two seasons out of a blue barrel. When we switched to stainless barrels, we got about 5,000 to 6,000 rounds per barrel. (This is in 308 Win).'

We change barrels when the group opens up.

If the barrel has a suitable shank, it is common to cut the chamber section off the barrel and re chamber. This set-back removes most of the worn barrel and makes the shorter barrel almost new.

Krieger has a disclaimer that SS is not as strong in below zero weather? I thought that was odd.................Harold

Could re crowning the muzzle solve the problem/extend the life of the barrel?

Periodically 'touching' up the crown may help the accuracy.... it depends on how much damage it has received when cleaning the barrel.
