Rem 5r or ?

I hope some of you guys can give me some direction. I like some of the reviews i've seen on the rem 5r and then I also heard alot of very good reviews on the savage 10/110 BA. Now for my buget I don't want to spend more than $3000 on the rifle. Second I'm looking at optics , maybe a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T or something you guys might suggest. Now I will be hitting paper and I'm probaly going to shoot no more than a 1000 yrds but I want something really accurate and yes I'm willing to upgrade the rifle in the future too.
 
$3000 will cover the rifle and good optics with ease. I have a 5R and a model 12 Savage. The Savage shoots great the 5R I have not shot yet, the bolt is away getting a larger bolt knob installed. Get the one you like the looks and feel of better. Cheers Roscoe
 
5R rem 700 is Probally on of the best buy, very comparable to the Tikka T3 varmint. Cost couple hundred more than Tilka T3 Varmint, but got a much better stock system.
 
I have/owned the following:
-R700 5R in .223 (currently in McMillan A5)
-R700 5R in .308 (currently in McMillan A5)
-Tikka T3 Tactical in .308 (currently in McMillan A5)
-Savage 10 FCP in .308 (McMillan A5) - sold though I regret
-Savage 110 FCP HS Precision in .338LM

All perform admirably. Out of the box, the Tikka was the most consistent, but I changed stocks as I like the A5- the R700's I changed stocks and bedded (also 10 FCP .308) to inch out the consistency, but I don't mind as I really enjoyed tinkering and making them work well. You could probably pick any and be happy. I do find the 5R stainless ones the easiest to clean though.

I have a Nightforce 5.5-22 (~$2200)on my 110FCP .338 and it is worth the money. The other 3 have Trijicon TR23 5-20 (~$1100) scopes and I quite like them but some will find the reticles too thick, glass is great however but you need a 20moa rail- not a big deal.

Bigmofo, if you are going to change the stock on the 5R, is it worth buying the 5R, or perhaps a cheaper model that doesn't come with as expensive a stock as the 5R. Or is there some advantage of the 5R over a cheaper SPS heavy barrel?
 
If you are looking to upgrade in the future just save yourself some headaches and just get one built. Personally I would talk to a Smith or a sponsor here like North Shore Barrels, Mystic Precision or ATRS and get them to just build what you want. 3k could buy you a very, very nice custom rifle and even have lots of change left over for optics.
IMO Leupold are very overpriced for what you get. Sightron, Nightforce and even Bushnell Elite are better options. Much better bang for buck performance.
 
The Stock on the 5r is very good. McMillan Stocks are excellent, its about you like personally and what you can afford to spend. McMillan and HS Presision are both used by the military and are both durable. McMillan is stronger and a step up IMHO. I currently use the HS Precision on my Rem 700 and find it good enough.
 
Thanks guy's I think I will go for a 5r shoot it alittle a maybe look into some improvements to it. If I end up getting a night force what would you recomend.and buget is not an issue.
 
re Nightforce the NXS 8-32x56 is a good place to be but consider the Sightron Siii in the same range for about 1/2 the price. I have both scopes and while the NF is a we bit better only you can judge if t is worth the price difference. Personally, I'd go with the Sightron or save some more money and move to S+B which is clearly a better scope either of the NF or Sightron.

The stock change was only a personal preference and not necessarily needed. The 5r in .308 is a 1:11.25 twist versus the 1:12 twist for the SPS, unless you go for the AAC-SD which is a 1:10 twist, and better for the heavier bullets- 175gr+. You'll likely have better luck out to 1000 yds with the heavier bullets.

If one is set on the McM A5 from the start, the 10 FCP McMillan is probably the better choice to keep costs of upgrading down. It is also a 1:10 twist.
 
I believe that the cry once thing in precision rifle does apply here, top notch rifles will really give it back to you on the paper and i do agree that the Sightron scope is actually the best deal on the market... JP.
 
Okay Rem 5r it is going to pick it up on monday $1130 tax in . Now i have to decide on a scope it's looking like I might get a NF 8-32x56 NXS . Does anybody know where I might get the best price.
 
What do you think of the potential of an AAC-SD? Its reasonably priced, but has that low grade Remington finish I'm guessing,and a somewhat flexible stock. But at around $600, the stock could be upgraded. I'd like a McMillan A5.
 
I can't say because my buudy works there but what's killing me is the scope deal. I could get a Mark 4 8.5-25x50mm LR/T M1 Illum. Reticle Riflescope for $1750.00 plus tax but some guys say there no good. Then I try with a NF 8-32x56 NXS and some more guys say no don't. I looked up the sticky thread in opics were the guy did a big review and he did mention to stay away from Leupold but had great reviews with NF. So now I'm stuck
 
I don't know much about us optics but aren't they in the same price range a s&b? If so s&b ALL THE WAY!!! Or ziess hendsolt.. Nothing really compares. iMO

Why don't you go have a look through a few of the contenders as optics are a pretty subjective topic. What looks good to me, might not to another. You're spending some serious coin so you would probably thank yourself later. I've looked through a few Mark 4's and thought they were very nice scopes- certainly not "no good" that's for sure. Just to me the NF was better, so I bought it as it was in my budget- S&B was too much coin (and long wait) for me.
