Looking for a 17 HMR???

i bought one of those marlins a while back. When i went to sight it in, i found it shot 7-15" groups at 50 yards, and with hornady 17 gn ammo, EVERY shot was tumbling through the target. some of those groups were literally 12"! I brought it back, and showed them the targets, they said the rifle was screwed.... said it had a bad barrel, and took it back, and i got a full refund. They offered me another marlin, i declined, and bought a savage 93r17 bsev, and never looked back. ;-)

You can get a bad gun with any company... I have Savage's and they are sweet shooting guns... but my buddies MARLIN kept up with our 100 yard groups (sub-moa)... it is the same VSF model that Wholesale has on sale.

I have the 917VR (heavy barrel, synthetic stock) its a cracking rifle that shoots well under MOA with most ammo. My only gripe is the trigger - it breaks clean enough, just at about 8lbs!!

I think the trigger more than any other component has the most potential to be badly made on lower end guns. In the day and age of law suits they will always make them overly safe by being too heavy rather than light. Think its the luck of the draw though Im sure some come out the factory breakin sweetly at 3-4 lbs.

Wholesale still have em for $230

Try a Savage Accu-trigger... they are actually pretty nice... and can easily be made nicer. I recently bought a BVSS in 17 HM2... and didn't realize until I got it that it was a "Pre-E" non-accutrigger model... WOW what a difference... the old triggers really SUCKED! I bought a Rifle Basix trigger and dropped it in... much better now.

Bought this a few weeks ago:

Savage 93R17 BTVS

Beautiful gun with great weight distribution, excellent fit and made in Canada.

Plus 1 for Savage. Thats the model I currently shoot and its awesome.

+2...I love my 93r17 TR. I got mine from Wolverine about a month ago ($495) and could not be happier with it. I'm not a bad shot and I don't think I will ever be able to do the accuracy of this rifle any justice, it's simply superb.

I bought the 917 VSF three years ago (the stainless fluted barrel with driftwood laminate looked so nice!), and it has been a deadly accurate beast for me, taken gophers, crow and magpie out past 250 yrds. My friends all bought .17s after doing our gopher hunting trip and watching me have all the fun where their 10/22s couldn't reach. They all bought either Marlins or Savages, and all love them. The accuaracy of the Marlin makes me overlook the crappy action and stupid magazine design.....and as far as the trigger goes, it was OK out of the box but the boys at Corlanes made it very nice at 2.5#.
