Twist & Bullet Weight

I have a .223Rem wit a 1 : 9" twist. What is the maximum bullet weight I can expect this barrel to stabilize? Simple question but I have read anywhere between 62gr. and 70gr.

It will be trial and error but maybe up to 75gr.

It would be worth trying 75 grainers but that's about it from everything I've gleaned off the net.

Try the 69g SMK. They shoot great out of every 1:9 I have tried. The 70g Bergers are great too, but are more expensive.

• Hornady 75gr A-Max boxes were stamped with 1-8" or tighter barrel twist.
• Sierra 77gr SMK requires 1-7" barrel twist.
• Sierra 69gr SMK requires 1-9" barrel twist.
• Berger 73gr Match Boattail is recommend for 1-9" barrel twist
• Berger 75gr Match VLD is recommended for 1-8" barrel twist

These recommendations are under nominal conditions (59F, near sea-level) under optimal conditions (95F at 5000ft elevation) you might get the 75gr bullets to stabilize.

Easiest way to find out is to try it.

Put a add in the EE for 15 or twenty of the bullets you want to try, no sense in buying a whole box just to find out that your first two shots keyhole, then your faced with trying to sell the open box on EE, with the prices on shipping it doesn't make that plan feasible.
If I had 75 grain bullets I would just send you a few to try, but I go from 70 up to 80 and then again to 90, nothing in the middle................yet.

For what its worth I shoot a 7,8 and 9 twist 223, the 9 eats home made 68 grain flat base, the others are slowly being converted to a how do you say vegetarian diet, if it can't be grown at home it shall not be flung.........

Sierra 77gr SMK requires 1-7" barrel twist.

My 1:8 works very well with 77gr SMKs.

The barrel makers all have data on twist and special bullets usually have twist recommendations with them...

Here is Shilen's:

.224 CF
- 7" for bullets heavier than 70gr.
- 8" for bullets heavier than 70gr.
- 8"* Ratchet rifled 4 groove
- 9" for bullets up to 70gr.
- 12: for bullets up to 63gr.
- 14" for bullets up to 55gr.
- 14"* Ratchet rifled 4 groove
- 15"* for bullets up to 55gr. driven 4,100 pfs or more
- 16:* for bullets up to 55gr. driven 4,300 fps or more

I had great results with 70gr Berger VLDs in my 1/9.

My Rem700P with a 1:9 twist shot Berger 73gn, and SMK 77gn bullets perfectly. It depends on bullet length, which usually is related to wt, but with some profiles or the plastic tips that Hornady uses some bullets of lesser wt can be longer. As an example my rifle could not shoot Hornady 75gn Amax's (have a plastic tip) eventhough they shot the 77gn SMK's very well
