Is anyone here an IPSC shooter in Edmonton? I was wondering what divisions are common in Edmonton. I was thinking of production but it looks like the custom action job I got on my pistol disqualifies me for that division (it's currently in the US getting said action job and should arrive long after i receive my rPAL) :p. I've seen a couple of Open shooters down at the range but I'm not sure thats the kind of shooting i want to do. Are non IPSC allowed to come down to the range during the saturday events? I don't even have my rPAL yet (although the application is sent) so i don't really want to be a (not even) FNG and pester anyone. I do have a range membership. Are spectators allowed to come do the events? I have read most the rules on the equipment and divisions (not much on the actually ranges though).

Production would be most popular in IPSC but many shoot Standard and Open. There was a match last weekend in Spruce Grove you should have come down and checked it out. Visitors are welcome as long glasses and hearing protection is worn. Everyone is a new guy at this game when you start. IPSC isnt a tough crowd to new guys around Alberta from what i have seen and experienced.

I would recommend you shoot with what you have and then go from there.

You wont be pestering anyone. I spent a good chunk of Saturday's match at spruce grove talking to people interested in the sport!

Your gun probably wouldn't qualify for production division. You may be able to shoot standard division. What gun and what caliber?

If you are able to, stop by Phoenix range on 50st on Saturday - Dave S will be there teaching a black badge course, something you will have to do in order to shoot. Bring eye and ear pro, he may allow you onto the range to see what they do. I may be there too should you have any questions!

Otherwise, we are having a steel challenge match at spruce grove on Sunday. Come by, many shooters there are also IPSC shooters and would love to answer any questions you may have!

Its a sig p226 enhanced elite .40 S&W. It's currently at greys guns getting their enhanced competitive leverage action package. Which meets uspsc production but apparently not ipsc cause the smith said he can might have to replace trigger assembly (although he said he'd try to do it with the factory srt). I should be at phoenix on Saturday. I'm there most weekends spending my money on ammo ;). Usually early afternoonish.

You may not be able to shoot at Phoenix on Saturday due to the course. Usually the rifle or pistol bay is closed depending on class size? Check the Phoenix website!

If the smith is replacing anything, it won't qualify for production. Production modifications is limited to what is a factory option (SRT is one, so that is good to go), and minor polishing for fitting.

.40 is going to put you at a disadvantage in production, especially if you buy full power factory ammo, against the softer 9mm that everyone shoots. If you reload, there ate recipes that allow for a minor load even softer than 9mm. You can shoot standard if you like, but you'd be up against some highly tuned guns at that point!

Do you know of Bruce Grey the smith/shooter in the us? It's his shops top (standard) competitive package. A tuned up gun is not my worry since I'm sure I'll have that. I got this gun because I'm most interested in standard division and the .40 S&W seemed to give me the most flexibility. Combat arms seems to sell a minor And major loaded ammo for it untill get into reloading. My issue is I'm not sure the shooter is tuned up to standard division at the moment ;). I've done my research but I think I've exhausted goggles info without actually taking my blackbadge but I think I have to wait till my rPAL comes.

I was pretty sure it said only the rifle range was closed when i looked on the board but ill check the website anyway...or show up anyway.

I would have to slightly disagree regarding .40 vs 9mm. The production division winner on Saturday, and he came 2nd on Sunday (Tango Delta) shoots a stock Glock in .40 with factory loads.

As was stated in other threads, it's the archer, not necessarily the bow or the arrows. ;)

As D noted above, most people are pretty helpful and want to see new shooters come out. If you ask, most people are more than happy to talk about their gear.

I've been worried a little at how the ipsc community treats new shooters. Some things like this can be very elitist. There was a guy at the range last Saturday that was really helpfull while I was struggling with my trigger work. Don't think he was a ipsc shooter though since he was shooting a .22 target pistol (although nothing saying he doesn't shoot others).

You won't find to many IPSC snobs in Alberta (if any) so come on out. Not to many SIG guys either as I have found out, you'll definately want that SRT trigger.

I am a new IPSC Alberta shooter and have shot 2 matches. For the most part everybody has been great. One experienced guy babysat me for the first weekend and made my BB qualifying match a blast. Just like everywhere there are a few dicks but just smile and nod.

2.5lb SA pull 6.5lb DA pull 50% less reset on the SA and minimal aftertravel...or so goes the advertised on Mr Grey's site. Again i'm more worried about the shooter than the gun.

You were really lucky to have a squad mom like him on your first one!!

all static stages (ie, you don't move, just draw and shoot)

Nope, there is movement in "Showdown" and "Outer Limits"
