Redhead 4-12x scope any good for 30-30 lever?

That's a lot of magnification for a 30-30, you get something that pops up on you in the bush 4x is going to be hard to get a quick shot off with. Something like a 1-4x is nice on a 30-30, I run a fixed 2x Leupold scout on my Marlin GG and it's just perfect magnification.

I havent been able to go hunting yet and when I do it will be moose in Newfoundland, I wanna take down my first with my mosin. First rifle should get the first kill. But back on topic I would only be using it for target shooting, for the time being. Is redhead a good brand that can hold up to the 30-30 punishment? I just read a thread on an ncstar scope failing and am worried about the redhead cause it was rather inexpensive.

Aside from the fact that a 4-12x scope is a poor match with a .30-30 levergun, I think it's a pretty safe bet that they're junk, given the price they sell for.

I'm running 3-9 redfield on my marlin 3030. Shot 3 deer with it last year on 3 power. I'd put a 2-7(nikon prostaff works good for me on 2 other rifles) or even a 1-4 if I decided to take this one off.

I'm not trying to insult your redhead scope, but I would'nt even put one on a .22lr rifle. My hunting partner had a redhead 3x9x40 on his ruger 10/22, and I had the exact same ruger 10/22 with a $60 bushnell rimfire 3x9x32, and after you looked through his redhead & then looked through my $60 bushnell, it made my $60 bushnell look like it was a $400 leupold.....it was that much clearer & bright, with half as much blinking effect, compared to his redhead scope....he took the redhead scope off, and put it on his kids pellet gun......just my honest opinion, sorry, but redhead scopes blow.

If you wanted a cheap alternative, then I would look for a cheap bushnell 1x4, 1.5x5, 2x7, or 3x9x40 banner. Best bet IMHO, would be a $100 bushnell red dot, because your max range with a 30/30 is aIbout 150 yards, so no magnification, or low magnification is all that you really need for those ranges. If it was me personally, I would try to find a used red dot or 1x4 powered scope for under $100, or spend $60, and buy a set of williams fiber optic fire sights, because a lever action rifle is nice light, well balanced bush gun, thats nice to carry, and putting a heavy scope on it, kind of changes a lever action rifle in a negative way....and especially with a crappy redhead scope that can't be trusted....so sorry, but that scope is the last thing that would match with a marlin 30/30 lever action....a inexpensive red dot or 1.5x4x32 scope would be a much better match, if your wanting inexpensive optics that would belong on your marlin.

IMO a 2-7 Redfield would do much better on your rifle.

Well said.

I have an old 2x7x32 (33?) Redfield on my Marlin 336 and so close it just about
rubs on all ends.
I would be willing to bet it goes back to the early sixties.
I was just looking at it tonight with the idea of changing the scope to a smaller
old 2.5 Bushnell.
This set up just makes way to much sense for my eyes.
Clear, crisp and bullseye at a hundred yards even with my chitty
shooting eye.

I don't know, for a death dealing smokeless powder round like the mighty 30-30, I think he's under scoped. Really, for that much horsepower you really need 6-24 as a mimimum, and an 8-32 or 10-50 would be even better. No such thing as too much magnification with a cartridge that powerful. - dan

If you have the gun, and you have the scope, do it! If it's a range only gun for now then by all means throw it on! If/when the scope breaks THEN buy a new scope, until that time plink away at the range and have fun with it!

If you do decide to take the 3030 cannon out hunting, make sure that you can trust the scope 100%. If you don't trust the readhead then get a difference scope. It would be a shame to miss a trophy buck because the scope lost zero, or even worse wound it and the animal suffers or worse yet, runs off wounded and you can't find it!
