Hunt with a milsurp sporter or a manufactured sporting rifle?

I wonder how many of us use military rifles, and how many use rifles built for hunters. Perhaps this has been done before, but I could not find it.
I wonder what the ratio is. I hunt with a a 6.5x55 ackley imp on a 96 military mauser. Also a 7mm rem mag built on a 1910 Ross. What do you guys use?

M44 Mosin the way it left the factory in 54R.

The pig stick gives me extra confidence if anything charges at me hehe.

Lee Enfield No.4Mk.2 and a NEF Handi-Rifle. So I affect the ratio not at all, sorry.

This season I'll be trying out a Parker Hale Supreme conversion of a Lee Enfield No.4.

My hunting rifle is just the way my favorite sniper of WWII used it. Sadly mine is a refurb, but it gets the job done.

New guns just don't have the same quality for the kind of money you pay for these milsurps.

x 7!

My favourite rifle is my husqvarna swede in 6.5x55, which has been modified by a previous owner (its a tradex rifle)
next after that is my 1956 no4mk2(F) in .303 (which i hope to shoot at a mil shoot event in ontario next summer).

I love milsurp rifles, i have a couple of candidates to bring back from the dead, and i would love to hunt with them!

I have in the past used 2 lee-enfield, a m96 mauser, and a m1917.

These days I hunt with a pair of Marlins, a 336 30-30 and a XS-7 7mm-08.

Thinking about picking up another swede sometime though!

My first several deer were shot with a Ross M-10 303.

Then some deer and bears with a commercial 243

Then a deer and some bears with a Mosin 91/30.

Then some bears with a home-sporterized Mosin scout rifle and one with a BSA sporterized U.S. Model of 1917 30-06.

Then an elk, a moose a deer and more bears with a Century modified P-14 action in 300 Winchester magnum. Then another elk.

Lately a moose and some deer with a commercial 270, a bear with a Husqvarna 7x57 and a bear with the P-14 300.

So it' s kind of a mix of what I feel like hunting with that day.

If someone justs wants to hunt I'd always recomend getting a Stevens 200, good rings and bases and a VX-1 or something like that. It's may be a bit more than a sporter, but not by that much and you know it's going to be an ideal hunting rig. No newbie will have to piss around with shot out bores, poorly bubba'd scope bases, ####ty scopes and less than stellar accuracy of many milsurps (bubba'd or not bubba'd.)

That being said I love to hunt with milsurps on occasion. Varity is the spice of life and on casual days I've used my MN 91/30, Swiss K31, Enfield No. 5 and even my SVT 40. Although when I need a no nonsense rig I'm not reaching for a milsurp. Not that they are not reliable, but they just don't have all the attributes of a good, proven modern rifle. e.g. most of my milsurps are as reliable as my M77, but none are, both, as lightweight or as accurate.

Great pics... Actually, I have shot moose with a 93 mauser 7x57, 98 mauser 30-06, siamese mauser 45/70,, 6.5 x55 ackley improved, on a 96 mauser. an Enfield No
5, A mule deer with P14 rechambered to 300 win mag, to make a 303 win mag, I have never seen anything to shoot while packing either the 43 mauser or the 7 mm mag on the ross. It is not that I really think that milsurps are superior, it is just that they seem to keep coming to me. I am fairly good at making them hit where they are looking, and that is at least half the fun. I count accuracy as how well a person can shoot off hand, as that is what all of my hunting is. I am sure that there are people who can shoot2 MOA or less off hand, I have just never met one. I hunt moose in the forest, and shoot them usually at 100 yards or less.

I looked at the 338 federal cartridge, and thought about it for a while, I have concluded that a 8mm will for all intents and purposes do what ever it will do.

X2
I concur, whole heartedly

7mm reg mag and going with a 6.5x55 I just got off the EE. Tough to beat that calibre. The 6.5x55 is a really nice shooting gun.

I recently sold off my milsurps. I hunt with a stevens 2506 and a baikal 4570. Sometimes my savage 300wm. And any of my dozen 12gas or half dozen rimfires. I did once bring an sks bear hunting as a backup gun but it was never needed. For me it doesn't have to be fancy just has to work and my modern rifles have never let me down

I started hunting with a Parker-Hale Lee-Enfield #4 Deluxe. Knocked down quite a few deer.
I got a really good deal on it at a time when I couldn't afford to buy a commercial hunting rifle.

I hunt whales with my 303 british. I am hoping to get a muskox and possibly a barrenland grizzly with my M1 Garand 30-06.
