Oprod spring guide before and after groups?

I've seen one example of before and after targets, but I thought it might be a good idea for some of you fellas who have both the stock and the after market spring guides to fire a couple groups to show the rest of us the difference.

Very interested to see some before an after targets.

This could be a sticky, too!!!
 
I can't say that replacing mine improved accuracy (I'm not really a very good shot) but it did make the action noticeably smoother to operate.
 
I did all my research on this issue back in 1986... We shot at 300m and the difference before and after is remarkable. My group sizes shrank almost (big almost) by half or if you need to split hairs 3/8 of the original size before the upgrade.

This is an old issue and well documented that the NM op rod spring guide is the common denominator to ALL NM builds. Nothing new here! :cool:

It's one of the best and cheapest and most immediate upgrades one can make. And nope yer #### should not fall off! :eek:

I just bought a S&J match spring guide - just installed. I have a CASM II scope mount on the way as well as a Vortex 2.5-10x50 Scope. Hoping this baby drives nails.

You betcha! Have the exact same set up and works great. Just need better rings for the scope, the Vortex ones are a bit on the loosie goosie side with only one allen bolt on each side. Otherwise great set up. ENJOY!

I tested 2 rifles in 3 shot groups here are the results, at 100 yds off a rest using 145 gr MFS Ammo

Rifle 1

1 group with improved guide 2 rounds together 1separated by 2 inches-all shots called good marked by 3

1 group with stock Norinco guide marked by "2"
x shots not part of test

1 group with Norinco stock guide -orange marks and "2"-"- max spread =~4"


So I would say the improvement is quite significant and worth the $50

Sounds like the same results we witnessed over 20 years ago. Great discovery, always good learning more and more! Next step, to get the retailers to sell more by stocking more of these units! :D

I upgraded mine as well with the sage op rod spring guide and a new spring as well (from treeline), and the gun is much smoother, both shooting and just pulling the op rod back and forth. I havn't done any accuracy testing with it and I havn't gotten around to fixing the op rod guide yet... it's a little lose.
 
the only criticism of the test I have is the 3 rd. groups, particularly for a battle rifle. 5 rd's would have been a better test, 10 rd groups might really show a trend

I suppose that is true enough-but the difference was so huge,it really was apparent to me immediately. The rifle for test 2 never shot as well as the rifle 1 previously even though rifle 2s' trigger is much, much better-but with the improved spring guide- the rifle 2 shoots extremely well, better in fact than rifle 1- previously these rifles would hold 3-4" groups, with rifle 1 being more consistent.For the 3 tests I made with rifle 2 here-when the improved guide was used all bullet holes touched.
 
Well i got out tonight with the M14, new oprod spring guide (S&J) and my new Vortex 2.5-10x50. I was making little clovers at 50 yards no problem with the Norinco Green Box 7.62x51 ammo.

I'm really happy with this rig now.

I havent changed my op rod guide yet, but I have sorted out the gas system and guide as well as the trigger group and flash suppresor my rifle is so much better. I just tightened up and smoothed out everything on the gun looking to get the "ping". The "ping" still evades me but the gun is so much better. I could be wrong but I think the best thing I did was smooth out the trigger group by dry firing it like 1500 times. I might get one flyer id a day now, I used to get a flyer in most groups.
Still going to swap out the guide too many people are getting good results.
