Im just wondering why so few companies are making .22's with 16.5" bbls if they are supposedly the perfect length?
I sure wish CZ would bring back another 16.5" bbl'd gun, may have to look at the Savage if I can ever find one.

Cheers!!

I cant answer your question, but i have a 16.5" Dlask barrel on my 10/22 and its WAY more accurate than i am, but i will say your right that it is the perfect length, as far as compactness, accuracy, and velocity! i will probably never sell this barrel, or gun....
not after i was able to shoot a fly at about 40 yards :)

I love 16" too. My marlin papoose with one was so accurate it surprised everyone who witnessed it in action. My CZ Scout is also a very accurate rifle for a sporter. I will say the only downside if it can be considered one is the volume. My 16" scout is a loud little bugger. I even tried CCI Quiet because I wanted something to use on our camping trip that was comfortable to shoot without hearing protection. Even the quiet ammo is loud in this gun. Quiet enough to get away without earbuds, but it sounds similar to CCI SV out of a regular 22" barrel.

I put a 16" Shilen heavy barrel on a Savage Mk.II action and am very pleased with the results.

Here in Canada, customising a rifle with a 16 inch barrel might make your gun a restricted firearm is my understanding.

You can buy a rifle like a Ruger or Remington, etc. with the manufacturer's 16 inch barrel but you cannot replace an 18 inch barrel (the minimum) with a barrel under 18 inches or it will become a restricted firearm.

Guys here in Canada building 12 inch barreled rifles from a stock Ruger 10/22 are likely required to register them as restricted firearms.

You need to review Canadian firearms laws. You are thinking of semiauto centerfire rifles and shotguns. Swapping a shorter mfr'd barrel on a rimfire does not change its class unless overall length become less than 660mm

You sir are mistaken. OAL is basically the only determining factor.

Incorrect.

A semi-automatic centre-fire rifle must have a barrel 18.5 inches or greater in length and be more than 26 inches in overall length to be non-restricted.

All other types of firearms must only be 26 inches or greater in overall length to be non-restricted. (Meaning: barrel length specifically on any rimfire is irrelevant)

What IS illegal is modifying a factory barrel through sawing, cutting or any other means to any length under 18". Doing so makes your firearm prohibited. This does not mean that you cannot buy manufacturer's barrels that are less than 18" inches in length.....only you may not modify an existing barrel to below 18" in length.

For example:

Factory 22" barrel = legal
Cutting a 22" barrel down to 18.2" = legal
Cutting a 22" barrel down to 17" = illegal
Factory 16" barrel = legal
Cutting a 16" barrel to 15.5" = illegal

Guys here in Canada building 12 inch barreled rifles from a stock Ruger 10/22 are likely required to register them as restricted firearms.

Only if by doing so they reduce the overall length of the firearm to below 26 inches.

Please take the time to inform yourself of the regulations.

Back on Topic.

I assume that in the States that you need a tax stamp for a 16 inch barrel (sbr) so the demand from American Manufactures is not there.

No, an SBR is a rifle with a barrel *shorter* than 16 inches. That's why all the AR-15 carbines from US manufacturers have 16 (or 16.1, 16.2, etc.) barrels

Not to high jack, but does anyone know the shortest bbl u can put on a marauder/nomad stock if you pinned it?

12.5" just clears the standard forearm and leaves you well over 26" OAL. The standard kit is about 29.5" OAL by itself, so you may be able to go to an 8.5" barrel with a modified forearm and still be just over 26", but I cannot confirm that. Adding a permanent recoil pad (~1" thick or more) to that short LOP stock would make the 8.5" barrel option legal, assuming a pinned stock.

Ok simple way to look at it

AR 15 restricted no matter what

AK 47 prohibit no matter what.

Tommy Gun Prohibit mp5 same thing no matter what

Now a Center fire Semi auto has to meet 2 things to be non restricted. 18.5 inch barrel or longer and must be longer then 26 inches

Now a Rimfire semi auto has to meet only 1 thing 26 inches long

No barrel can be shorter then 4.14 inches or it's also a prohibit firearms

Handguns can't be reclassified no matter what barrel is put on them They're restricted or prohibit only

Rifles can be Nonrestricted, restricted, or prohibited.

All pumps, levers, bolt, break action, and muzzle loaders only have to be 26 inches to be non restricted.

It’s really simple to understand really.

Now you can convert a firearm from non restricted to restricted by changeing the parts and making it fall into the catagory I've done it both ways. I've had to change a frame only firearm into a firearm (10/22) was converted into a non restricted 10/22 with a 10.5 inch barrel but the stock made it 32 inches well over 26. If you want to go shorter and make a rifle restricted you can do it with an aftermarket barrel and then phone the cfo and they just change it over the phone or you have to have it varified by someone who can say it's this or that class of firearm. To do non restricted to restricted they will do it over the phone the other way around you need a gunsmith or have to take it to them its a pain in the rear sometimes if you do it your self.

Unless they are manufactured shorter. All the "mares leg" lever actions and their variants are shorter than 26", but that's how they were manufactured and approved so they are non-restricted. The stupid part is they are considered pistols in the USA.

In many ways, our firearms laws are stupid and convoluted. Having two classes of firearms and one clear set of guidelines for everything would be nice instead of all "half laws".

In their entirety our firearms laws(and many other laws) are illogical and stupid.
